Jessica Weintraub Gaffney
Events and Marketing Manager
Just Food
September 06, 2011

We've been big fans and supporters of Just Food, our own neighborhood non-profit, for several years. So when we got the call from Jessica to help out with this year's Let Us Eat Local event (click here to see the invitation and buy tickets), we were excited to get to know her as a new employee, who happened to snag her position through a post on GFJ. We love nothing more than to make contact with people who found their dream job through our website, as it's proof that we're cultivating a strong community. And we can't think of a better organization, or event, that has given us more inspiration to do so.

FYI if you love Just Food, too, help them help farmers by bidding in their incredible auction.

What attracted you to a good food job?

I joined a Just Food CSA a few years ago and fell in love with the concept and the organization. I think I decided right then that if I could find a good food job, my professional life would be much more fulfilling and exciting. At the time, I was working in entertainment marketing and I knew I had to make a change. I had been searching for a job/industry that would allow me to give back to my community, to be challenged and to actually enjoy my day to day work life. Once I got more involved with my CSA and did more research, I realized working on sustainable food projects was the right choice for me.

How did you get your current good food job?

I started volunteering for Just Food and I became a Farm School NYC certificate student. So, I was basically a Just Food groupie. I also reached out to a couple of the employees to ask their advice about the sustainable food industry. By the time I saw the job posting (on goodfoodjobs.com and justfood.org), Just Food already knew about my passion for the organization. I think that definitely helped me land the position.

How did your previous work or life experience prepare you for a good food job?

I have more than seven years of events and marketing experience working with large and small businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Luckily, I was able to transition my event and marketing skills pretty easily to the Just Food Events and Marketing position, where one of my main responsibilities is to plan our annual gala tasting event, Let Us Eat Local. I also think my experience with Farm School NYC helped prepare me. Having a passion for good food doesn't hurt.

What advice do you have for others in search of a good food job?

I would recommend volunteering or getting involved with companies/organizations where you would like to work. Meet their employees, attend their events, volunteer your time, etc. I think employers appreciate candidates who have a genuine interest in their organization and can prove it with their actions.

If you could be compensated for your work with something other than money, what would it be?

Fresh vegetables, coffee ice cream, and tickets around the world.
