Job description
Radix Farm is looking for one or two part-time interns for the 2012 season!
ABOUT
Our mission is to use sustainable farming practices to grow healthy and delicious produce for folks in the Washington, DC area. At Radix Farm, sustainability means treating the entire farm environment with care and respect – the ecosystem, the growers, and our customers. We use natural growing methods (no synthetic chemicals) and farm on a small-scale, which enables us to provide individual attention to the plants and nurture the soil. In addition, we strive to increase local food security and make nutritious food accessible to all members of the community.
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
Interning on Radix Farm will give you a clear sense of what it takes to run a small farm business, how to market produce through a CSA, farmers market, andrestaurants, and training in organicproduction of hundreds of varieties of vegetables. Interning with Radix Farm would be a great fit for someone that wants to gain more farm experience but is not currently able to live on the farm or commit to working 50+ hours a week.
Radix Farm interns will participate in planting, weeding, harvesting, transplanting, mulching, distributing CSA shares, and various small farm enterprises. Interns will often work alongside the farmer, and are encouraged to ask questions while completing tasks to learn while doing. We can also arrange the opportunity for farm visits and workdays on other area farms. Interns can take plenty of fresh produce home every week.
INTERNSHIP OPTIONS
One-Day Per Week Intern
For those with little farm experience but an interest in learning the basics of a vegetable farm, we offer a one-day per week internship. Interns will participate mainly with harvesting, washing, and packing veggies, as well as with planting, weeding, mulching, and other farm tasks. Ideally, the intern(s)would be able to commit to one full day a week for at least four months, though preferably for the entire season (March through November). The intern must be available to work either Tuesday or Friday.
Multiple-Day Per Week Intern
For those with at least one full season farm experience and an interest in pursuing farming as a career, we offer a two to four day per week internship. In addition to the field tasks mentioned above, these interns will learn about the business end of farming, including planning, record keeping, and budgeting, and will be asked to take on independent projects. The intern must be available to work either Tuesday or Friday and one to three other weekdays (occasional weekend days available). Preferably, the intern would be available for a full season (March to November). Upon successful completion of the season, there may be opportunities for advancement next year.
REQUIREMENTS
Farming experience is preferred, though not required. Most importantly, we are looking for individuals who have a keen interest in learning about small-scale farming, have a strong work ethic, are fast learners and efficient, and are able to anticipate what needs to be done and take the initiative to do it.
No housing is available on the farm. Interns must provide their own transportation to the farm. Radix Farm is located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland- approximately a 30 minute drive from Washington DC, and only 1.5 miles outside of the beltway.
