BikeMaine Food Coordinator Bicycle Coalition of Maine

  • Date Posted January 07, 2013
  • Location Portland, ME
  • Category Culinary / Nonprofit
  • Job Type Other
Job Description The Bicycle Coalition of Maine, Maine’s largest bike advocacy organization, is launching BikeMaine, a week long, 400 mile mass bicycle ride around Maine set to begin in September 2013.   BikeMaine, designed to be “a rolling celebration of Maine,” will use a different cycle route each September to explore the inland and coastal regions of the state, with riders camping in a designated host community each of 7 nights.   The host communities will prepare breakfast and dinners for the riders, using in-season, locally sourced food.

BikeMaine seeks an experienced Food Coordinator to oversee the planning, sourcing, preparing and serving of 18 meals over 8 days for 375-400 hungry people.  Because the meals will be prepared by community volunteers, the Food Coordinator must be able to work successfully with an ever-changing cast of volunteers and, in some instances, a pre-selected menu or community-wide tradition, in order to deliver nutritious and delicious meals in a timely fashion and within budget to BikeMaine participants and volunteers.

Successful candidate must be resilient, able to perform under stress and in less than optimal conditions while maintaining a sense of humor and pleasant demeanor. Experience with sourcing and ordering local foods is essential.   Goals of position include educating the community service organizations around planning and preparing menus using in-season, locally sourced foods and strengthening the community’s relationship with its local food sources.  This contract position is to start immediately at 10 hours per week and through July, after which the job will require the time necessary to complete the work in a satisfactory manner.  There will be a Host Community Orientation on March 1 that the Food Coordinator must attend.  The dates of the BikeMaine event are September 7-14, 2013.

The Food Coordinator oversees meal planning and food purchasing, preparing and serving for all BikeMaine meals, September 7-14, 2013.   To accomplish these tasks the Food Service Coordinator must work closely with the Meal Coordinator and volunteers in each of 6 Host Communities, as well as the lunch stops. The Food Coordinator will assist with other aspects of the BikeMaine event planning as time allows.
