Job description
The Shore Soup Project, a newly formed Rockaway-based grassroots organization focused on food justice and Hurricane Sandy relief, seeks a qualified candidate for a position as Summer Chef.
Our relief food truck and kitchen is a fast paced and friendly environment staffed by core staff and volunteers. We are looking for a chef/artist, a creative thinker who will understand the ethos of our project and communicate it well to others.
We serve free and sliding scale meals each day to those in need and to the community and its visitors at large, many of whom are still coping with the impacts of Sandy. The food supply in the kitchen will come from a variety of sources, including farmers market, CSA, garden and individual donations and items ordered from farms and distributors. As a result the daily dishes are created based on the vegetables and other ingredients available and only on pre-planned recipes where possible. There will be some menu items that you plan and execute and will be responsible for ordering ingredients from for.
Responsibilities for this position include:
-
creatively cooking healthy and hearty meals using what is available that day in the kitchen
-
engaging positively with volunteers and staff
-
supervising prep and ordering and receiving supply deliveries
This is full time-summer contract paid position. The time commitment will be significant, as will be your impact on the community, and you’ll be beachside all summer! Preference will be given to those who already have a Mobile Food Handler’s License and/or have taken a food protection course. A Mobile Food Handler’s license can be purchased on behalf of a candidate who does not possess one currently. Licensing requires taking a 4 hour food handlers course in Manhattan and visiting several city offices to fill out the appropriate paperwork. Those who are committed to seeing this process through to completion are strongly encouraged to apply. Rockaway residents are strongly encouraged to apply.
