Job Description Assistant to the Director
Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy
Teachers College Columbia University

The Center seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated person to join their staff as the Assistant to the Director. This person will work along side the Faculty Sponsor, Executive Director, and the rest of the Center staff on projects, research, and initiatives.

The Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy launched in February 2013 and was formerly the Center for Food & Environment. The Center's mission is to combine policy change with nutrition education to encourage healthier and more sustainable food choices. This is accomplished by working with policy makers, program developers, and community stakeholders to increase access to healthy foods, combat the over-abundance of unhealthy foods, promote a sustainable food system, and provide opportunities for people to learn about food and nutrition. The vision of the Center is people living in communities that have easy access to healthy foods and have opportunities for nutrition education that builds motivation and skills to choose, grow, and cook wholesome food.

Four main areas make up the Center's work: create and implement food and nutrition education materials, promote access to healthy and sustainable food choices, conduct research and evaluation that have policy implications, and prepare the next generation of food and nutrition professionals and leaders. These areas come together to make the center an intellectual hub for the intersection of food policy and education research.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the food and nutrition education efforts of the Center, some of which take place in the Teachers College EarthFriends Cooking Classroom and some of which take place in the field.
  • Assist with the creation of educational materials, marketing and promotion materials, reports, grants, and other documents.
  • Schedule meetings and events for the Faculty Sponsor, Executive Director, and other staff members.
  • Manage the Center's office and the EarthFriends Cooking classroom, and answer inquiries made to the Center.
  • Assist with the collection, management, and analysis of data from the Center's research projects.
  • Assist with organizing events, conference, workshops and meetings.
