THE ORGANIZATION
Sylvester Manor is a major site in the global history of food and culture, located on Shelter Island, New York. As the only largely intact northern plantation in the United States, Sylvester Manor reveals a distinctively American story of culture and landscape, stewarded by fifteen generations of a single family. Our not-for-profit educational farm brings the community together to preserve, explore and encourage a culture of food in America that is joyful, delicious and fair.
Over the past three years Sylvester Manor has begun the process of building an organization that preserves our history, farms our land and enriches life in exciting new ways. We have engaged the local community through programming such as our 60-family CSA and over 70 educational classes, workshops, tours and volunteer days since 2008. These programs have brought groups to the Manor to learn about both historic and modern connections between food, culture and place.
