Job Description EAT South Executive Director National Search

Mission Statement: 
EAT South (Educate • Act • Transform) encourages healthy lifestyles through education and sustainable food production in urban areas throughout the Southeast.

Vision: EAT South envisions communities across the Southeast that have access to fresh, healthy, affordable food and the knowledge about food preparation that supports a healthy lifestyle.

History:  EAT South is a trade name of The Hampstead Institute, a 501(c)3 non-profit entity established in 2008 to contribute to the the public realm through sustainable design, the establishment and improvement of healthy and lasting communities, and the concept of agro-urbanism. Founded by a handful of dedicated New Urbanists, Turning its focus mainly to agricultural urbanism, children's education, and healthy local food production, The Hampstead Institute honed its vision by establishing EAT South in November 2012.

Executive Director Position Overview: 
EAT South stands at a critical point: the organization has a strong foundation based on its mission, farms, support staff, educational programs, and community outreach. To grow and increase our impact, EAT South is in need of strategic, long-term fundraising capabilities from an Executive Director who can target key donors, secure sponsorships and donations, and develop long-term relationships with a growing donor base.  Fundraising and organizational awareness are the critical strengths we are seeking in our next Executive Director. Vision, energy, staff management, community involvement and many other attributes are important. But the ability to fundraise through donations, grants, and educational opportunities is an absolutely critical component. The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors and has the overall responsibility for the management and operations of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities
Fundraising
  • Develop and grow the annual Fundraising Plan, working with staff and Board
  • Develop relationships with corporations, public entities, and other donors
  • Develop a strong base of private donors and foundations Coordinate planning and implementation of events Research and apply for appropriate grant funding
  • Write and submit grant reports when necessary
Financial Management
  • Annual budgets: Update the annual budget, including its education-program budget, farm production budget, and resources necessary to implement work plans
  • Work with the Board Treasurer and bookkeeper to present monthly financial statements to Board
  • Coordinate with EAT South's bookkeeper responsible for EAT South’s financial records
  • Review receipts for all income and expenses. 
  • Meet weekly with bookkeeper to ensure all expenses and income properly allocated.
  • Review cash-flow
  • Oversee payroll and submit to bookkeeper
  • Oversee all invoices are properly submitted to partners Coordinate CPA’s filing of organization’s year-end 990.
Board of Directors
  • Develop agendas for quarterly Board meetings. 
  • Organize and meet monthly with specific Board committees  Update strategic plan with Board for EAT South
  • Produce an annual report to the Board that reflects progress towards the implementation of strategic plan
Communication
  • Collaborate with the Board’s Marketing committee and Matter to develop an annual communications plan (outreach activities, website updates and maintenance, bi-annual newsletters, monthly e-newsletters, printed collateral, events, etc.) 
  • Develop content and send out monthly e-newsletter Coordinate bi-annual newsletter content and oversee distribution
  • Coordinate website and social marketing sites are updated as needed
  • Develop relationships with and promote EAT South to local and national media partners
  • Develop and maintain farm-site aesthetics, including signage updates
Staff Management
  • Schedule and meet with all staff (farmers, education coordinator, Americorps, etc) on a regular basis to ensure work plans are properly implemented and resources are available for them to succeed
  • Bi-weekly production meeting with farm staff
  • Bi-weekly program meetings with education staff
  • Monthly all-staff meetings Implement annual evaluation of all staff, providing constructive criticism in verbal and written format
  • Ensure adequate compensation for all employees, and interview and hire new staff as necessary with Board input
Administration
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings and ensure that farm-sites are properly managed and maintained
  • Ensure that each staff member has adequate resources to complete his or her job, and is compliant with EAT South’s policies
  • Create a safety plan for all sites that includes vehicle usage, staff background checks, and program reviews, and ensure proper liability and property insurance coverage with our insurance provider
Education Program Management
  • Update and improve Education programs for EAT South including: Good Food Day, Garden In Every School, and Montessori School at Hamsptead program
  • Develop and sustain relationships with donors and sponsors leveraging communications collateral and press releases
Farm Production
  • Collaborate with staff Farm Managers to develop and implement annual work plans for each farm Meet with farm staff bi-weekly to ensure the work plans are implemented properly
  • Oversee each farm’s production, CSA program, restaurant sales, expansion activities, and quality control
Qualifications
  • Business-related college degree and (preferably) experience in Sustainable Agriculture or Agroecology 3 to 5 years experience managing a nonprofit organization
  • Successful track record in fundraising and grant writing
  • Ability to train and manage staff, interns, and volunteers Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven capacity to facilitate collaboration among diverse community groups
