Food Security Coordinator VISTA Catholic Charities of Northern NV

  • Date Posted April 21, 2014
  • Location Reno, NV
  • Category Nonprofit
  • Job Type Full-Time
Job Description About Us:

Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN) has been serving the region since 1941 and has grown to operate nine social-services programs serving individuals of all faiths. From hot meals and a food pantry to case management and affordable childcare, CCNN is proud to offer St. Vincent's programs to ease the pain of poverty. Most CCNN clients come from Reno and Sparks, whose reputations in the popular culture mask the pleasures of living here. Businesses held over from prior eras are being renovated into hip restaurants, lounges, and boutiques that add an urban flare historically provided only by casino entertainment. Recent additions include the Knitting Factory music venue and the stadium of the Reno Aces minor-league baseball team, both of which have become focal points in a reenergized downtown scene. Outdoorsy types relish a wealth of recreation opportunities including nearby Lake Tahoe, world-class skiing, and abundant cycling and running trails that dovetail with an increasingly pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly community.

About LEAPS:

The Legalization Empowerment and Assistance Program for Students (LEAPS) provides free immigration legal services to undocumented students whose paths to opportunity are blocked by their lack of valid immigration status. The LEAPS program offers a comprehensive case assessment to determine what, if any, immigration processes are within reach. For students with actionable cases, we offer our government-accredited immigration services free of charge and work with our donor community to help families afford the government filing fees for these processes. The program is in its second year and our next set of challenges centers on building the trust of the immigrant community to engage with the sensitive subject of immigration status. We are also building our presence in the larger community and partnering with other programs providing ESL instruction and rural services for survivors of domestic violence.

Position Description:

Although most of our VISTAs work on immigration issues, the Food Security Coordinator (FSC) will work on a different project. Our St. Vincent's Food Pantry is the largest food pantry in the state of Nevada, and in order to continue improving our aid to struggling families our pantry is planning an ambitious overhaul. Currently the pantry provides families with a box of staple food items to supplement SNAP benefits. In the new "Client Choice" model, clients will be allocated pantry credits that can be redeemed for items from the pantry that are appropriate to their needs, diets, culture, etc. This model has been implemented in other communities, and our Food Pantry Director has already completed some research on the topic.

Member Duties:

The FSC will expand upon this research and look deeply at other models to identify strengths and weaknesses. The FSC will then work with the Food Pantry Director to plan for the transition to Client Choice and help implement an overhaul by the end of 2014.
