Vice President of Development and Communications Common Threads

Job Description The Vice President of Development and Communications develop, manages and implements all external and internal communication strategies for the organization to educate the public about nutrition and cooking as a core competency and life-skill and effectively raise awareness of Common Threads.  This dynamic hands-on executive leads in a “roll-up your sleeves” approach to  fundraising and relationship management efforts for Common Threads to generate revenues for programmatic scale.

Responsibilities:·
  • The Vice President oversees the efforts to drive contributed revenue to Common Threads.  It is critical to coordinate development and marketing communications efforts so that all efforts to market and promote and secure philanthropic support for the organization are integrated and build on each other.  Developing a comprehensive Development Plan, implementing the plan and monitoring activity to meet benchmarks will be a critical component of this role that includes strategy and implementation.
  • Leads the strategic development and implementation of the Common Threads external communication strategy, including proactive and reactive media relations, entertainment industry outreach, editorials support, internal communication and social networking/innovation
  • Collaborates on marketing implications for other internal departments (e.g. message points, brand standards, newsletters, etc.)    
  • Directs or assists, as needed, in the strategic development and implementation of organizational priorities related to meeting needs of specialized populations, including children, parents and teachers  ·    
  • Serves as trusted advisor and lead communication partner for CEO; provides counsel to senior executives on communication strategies or issues; manages executive training and briefing needs; prepares and oversees development of executive presentations, including those of the CEO and senior leaders to community members, donors or other public audiences.  Provides functional expertise to support relationships with key industry and national non-profit partners, and assists with CEO’s efforts to recruit National board members, as well as advisory and associate board member is other markets   
  • Manages and implements an integrated, long-term public relations strategy to position Common Threads as a leading non-profit organization and leading nutrition/education organization with top-tier, industry and local business media  
  • Provides leadership in the development and execution of partner cause marketing and PR campaigns; develop support materials to enhance donor relationships
  • In consultation with organizational leadership, develops and manages the implementation of communication programs for signature Common Threads events; works closely with Philanthropy, Government Relations / Public Policy and Marketing to provide communication support for programs and projects; creates communication campaigns and activities with members, providing communication resources, templates and additional tools for message delivery.
  • Maintains a broad understanding of the nutrition/education/hunger-relief industry and operating environment including Common Threads’ position; develops communications plans and initiatives to further Common Threads’ role as a leader in creating school-wide cultures of health; manages a full editorial team (made up of program team, interns and volunteers) responsible for organizational content for online use, in publications, presentations and partner organizations  
  • Manages interdepartmental relations including integration with Philanthropy, Operations/Planning, Programs/Evaluation/Research, Marketing, Training and Capability Development, where appropriate  
  • Acts as lead spokesperson when appropriate or helps to identify and prepare most appropriate spokesperson
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality and discretion to set the tone for the department.    
  • Mentors less experienced corporate partnership staff members in account management and donor management 
  • Develops staff to deepen and broaden skill set, in all areas related to the cause marketing, philanthropy and communications   
  • Develops best-in-class success metrics to drive communication results; measures and evaluates the impact of communication strategies 
  • Effectively manages budgets, vendors and required external agency relationships   
  • Manages all revenue streams related to institutional giving to maximize contributions to Common Threads    
  • Centralizes and manages operations to maximize team to efficiencies
  • Develops and implements strategy for philanthropic support of organizational priorities, community needs and strategic alliances
  • Manages a team of high performance fundraisers focusing on top 30 corporate and foundation relationships of the Common Threads’ national office 
  • Manages relationships for a portfolio of corporate, foundation and individual donors 
  • Leads donor strategy for the portfolio of relationships to generate support for the organization’s strategic plan and across all organizational needs: food, funds, promotion and advocacy

Qualifications:
  • 12+ years  of progressive marketing experience, with an emphasis in partnership  marketing
  • Non-profit experience  or experience marketing an intangible preferred
  • Experience  developing and executing successful national cpg marketing campaigns,  promotions and partnership programs across a variety of communication and  media channels (with online emphasis) that drive brand and revenue
  • Enjoy working with a community or field of constituents and developing local  extensions to national promotions, to fit their needs
  • Ability to analyze program effectiveness
  • Experience  integrating promotional campaigns with broader brand standards
  • 10+  years of strategic communication leadership experience with 7+ years in  management 10+  years media and internal communication experience
  • Experience in managing the programs  function within a non-profit organization.
  • Excellent  national media relationships
  • Possesses vision, a passion for excellence, a positive attitude, strong interpersonal communication skills and a can-do, team-builder spirit
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Documented web communication experience
