FOOD FORWARD Truck Driver, Wholesale Produce Market Recovery (Part-Time, Independent Contractor: 16hrs/Week to start
Compensation: $15.00 / HR
Mission: Food Forward's mission is to rescue local produce that would otherwise go to waste, connecting this abundance with people in need, and inspiring others to do the same.
The Program: The Wholesale Produce Recovery Program (WRP) is a new program, that was launched in the first quarter of 2014, where we connect donations of large lots of nearly expired produce from wholesale produce donors at or around the downtown Los Angeles produce terminal, coordinating and managing these donations to large hunger relief agencies who in-turn distribute 100% of the produce to smaller "feeder" agencies serving food insecure individuals across Southern California. Since February, we have distributed nearly 2 million pounds of viable, fresh produce.
The Position:The Driver will report to the WRP Manager. The Driver will be responsible for early-morning produce pick-ups from donors at the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Terminal, and surrounding areas, delivery of the donations to receiving agencies, writing receipts & keeping accurate records of donations as well as other paperwork associated with donations. The driver is expected to provide great customer service, keep in constant contact with the WRP Manager and hand in paperwork daily. Schedule is still to be determined, but will be 2 -- 3 days during the week, from as early as 4am to about 12pm, sometimes earlier and/or later. Truck pick-up is either near downtown LA or Pacoima depending on schedule. This is a fast-growing new program, with great growth potential for the right candidate.
Minimum Requirements:
• Produce handling experience (ability to decipher quality & perishability) 2-5years a MUST!
• Current experience absolutely required driving a 22 -- 24ft box truck in compliance of traffic and safety laws while moving large amounts of produce.
• Valid Class C Driver's license
• Bilingual -- English & Spanish
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, squat, turn body, sit and walk
• Ability to lift and move cases (selecting product,placing on a pallet,loading and unloading) weighing up to 75 lbs continuously from heights ranging from floor to overhead
• Clean driving record
Skills/Qualifications:
• Extremely organized and efficient with excellent attention to detail
• Excellent verbal communication and strong customer service
• Team player
• Good geographical knowledge of Greater Los Angeles
