  • Job Type Part-Time
Job Description Job Description for a Crew Leader

Who We Are: The Grow Dat Youth Farm’s mission is to nurture a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing food. On our farm we work collaboratively to produce healthy food for local residents and to inspire youth and adults to create personal, social and environmental change in their own communities. Grow Dat is a place where people from different backgrounds and disciplines come together in research and practice to support public health, local economies and a sustainable food system in South Louisiana.

What We Seek: Grow Dat is seeking a part-time Crew Leader to lead a crew (made up of crew members and two Assistant Crew Leaders) from January 30th – June 30th, 2014. Prior to leading their own crew, Crew Leaders will participate in a four month training, from October, 2014 through January, 2015. The job is a combination of leading young adults in sustainable agriculture work and related tasks (taking students to market, working in the fields, etc.) and leading or co-leading workshops in the other three curriculum pillars (food justice, wellness and leadership). The crew members’ time is split evenly between agricultural work and educational workshops that are designed to enhance their capacity as leaders.

This job is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in learning how to develop a youth-based social entrepreneurship project. The work you complete will be an integral part of the successful development of the Grow Dat Youth Farm.

This job will begin with 10-15 hours/week of work-based training from October through January (work times are Thursday and Friday afternoons from 4-6 and Saturdays from 8-3). During this time you will learn content and skills from senior leaders and guest educators, build close relationships with other Crew Leaders and staff, and meet and bond with your Assistant Crew Leaders. The job also includes 20 hours/week from January 30th through May 25th and 40 hours/week for the month of June. This position ends after the staff evaluation session in early July.
