Senior Associate Food Editor
Bon Appétit Test Kitchen

Overview/Purpose

The Bon Appétit test kitchen is responsible for creating dozens of compelling and original recipes each month for the print and digital editions of the magazine. The Senior Associate Food Editor will be responsible for generating timely, beautiful, home-cook friendly recipe and menu ideas, developing those recipes for internal tastings and approval, and shepherding the finished recipe through our cross-testing and editorial process.

Bon Appetit’s recipe content is completely interwoven with our editorial mission and the perspective of our editors, photo, and art teams. Story ideas are generated by the staff as a whole, and the test kitchen is tasked with realizing those ideas in recipe form. Our test kitchen team produces approximately 60 new recipes each month, and the Senior Associate Food Editor will be tasked primarily with creating original recipes for feature stories, but is expected to contribute to FOB and MOB stories, in addition to the Prep School section. This position requires an ability to translate current restaurant trends into actionable, at-home recipes geared towards the recreational cook. Looking for someone super creative, passionate about food and cooking, home cook copacetic, flexible, articulate, intelligent, fun. Strong candidates will possess a strong editorial voice along with excellent culinary and food styling skills.

Primary Responsibilities

Contribute ideas for assigned stories; after approval, develop original recipes for print and digital issues
  • Produce finished dishes for tastings with editors, photo, and art teams (recipes may go through several rounds before being approved)
  • Develop recipes contributed by chefs and outside recipe developers
  • Oversee cross-testing process for each story
  • Write and edit recipes in accordance with Bon Appétit house style
  • Read and review story proofs during shipping weeks
  • Contribute written elements, such as sidebars or callouts, when needed
  • Attend photo shoots as needed to ensure food is styled and photographed in a way that is true to the final recipe
  • Brainstorm, collaborate, and help solve challenges with the rest of the food team, regardless of story assignment
  • Contribute ideas at monthly issue ideas meetings
  • Contribute web ideas at daily digital meetings

Requirements:
  • Four years experience in culinary field, including restaurants
  • Two years experience in food editorial
  • Strong food styling skills preferred
  • Candidates will be asked to provide a portfolio of previously published recipe work
  • Flexible, open-minded attitude and positive demeanor trumps all. No hot heads, divas, back-stabbers.
