Job Description About the Farm:

JCCC’s Campus Farm is located on roughly 2.5 acres in the Northwest corner of the main campus. 

The purpose of the farm is two-fold: to provide a hands-on educational experience for the Sustainable Agriculture program and to provide locally grown, chemical-free produce to the specifications of JCCC’s Dining Services and Culinary program.

During its development, the farm has provided educational opportunities for sustainable agriculture and culinary students. It has provided many opportunities for a wide range of disciplines to make farm visits and integrate some of the farm’s practices into their own curriculum. The Native American Studies program is in their third season of growing on dedicated farm grounds.

Currently, we have a variety of seasonally appropriate plantings in place. Throughout the 2014 growing season, we will continue to plant over 80 separate varieties of more than 30 different crops.

Position Description:

This position will coordinate the JCCC student farm and related outreach initiatives in cooperation with the Sustainable Agriculture program and the Executive Director of Sustainability.  The position will report to the Executive Director of the CfS as well as the Chair of the Sustainable Agriculture program.  

Duties:

Direct Farm Management:
  • Plan and implement optimal sustainable practices, production and learning opportunities for students utilizing available resources on campus in support of and in coordination with the Sustainable Agriculture program.
  • Coordination of full cycle of planting, harvesting, weed and pest management, preparing produce for sale, planning for future plantings, etc. with Sustainable Agriculture faculty and students.
  • Track produce sales, detail expenses, profit, loss
  • Work with JCCC dining services and hospitality programs in planning plantings to coincide with produce needs of those programs.
  • Cultivate on- and off- campus buyers for student produce for any surplus to provide students retail and wholesale sales experience and support the expenses of the farm through sales.
  • Responsible for maintenance and inventory control of student farm equipment, as well as planning and initiation of requests for equipment upgrades, new equipment, purchases, etc.
  • Substantial physical labor/mechanical expertise will be required in performing these tasks.
Outreach Initiatives:
  • Promote awareness of sustainability issues both on and off campus and engage our community in the learning process.
  • Offer tours of JCCC's campus farm and make appropriate off-site outreach visits to promote both the farm and the Sustainable Agriculture program.
  • Help coordinate the sustainability expo if/when appropriate.
  • Continue/enhance a campus farmer's market with JCCC student-grown produce and other school garden produce to bring more young people together at JCCC and continue to increase awareness of sustainable farming practices. 
Required Skills:
  • Coursework in Sustainable Agriculture required.
  • Business management training or experience required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with small, horticultural scale farm equipment.
  • Experience with greenhouse operations.   
Preferred:
  • Coursework in horticulture, agronomy, market farming, or related fields preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree with agricultural emphasis preferred.
  • Outreach experience, specifically working with K-12 schools. 
Required Experience:
  • One (1) year experience working with a farm with emphasis on fruits and vegetables required.
  • One (1) year of management experience, overseeing the work of other employees, volunteers required.
  • Composting experience required.
