Farm Manager Burge Organic Farm

Job Description About Us:
Burge Organic Farm is located on a 1000 acre plantation estate that has been in the same family since 1809. The farm is comprised of sixteen acres (which includes a three acre orchard and seven large high tunnels) that are certified USDA Organic. The property also is host to a private quail hunting operation, wedding facilities, cabins and a full-time culinary staff. The farm serves a large CSA, two farmers markets, and restaurant customers. We have a dedicated following of folks, and we have a passion for producing great food for them. 

Position Description:
Burge Organic Farm is seeking a creative, industrious, and productive Farm Manager to oversee and operate all aspects of the farm. The Farm Manager position presents an excellent opportunity for someone with the right experience to refine and continue to grow a well-established organic operation.  We are looking for someone who works hard, who is able to manage others, and who will work with outside staff to create a professional, integrated farm business. The manager will be expected to actively participate in all of the day-to-day work with employees in addition to applicable office work. The outgoing Farm Manager will be available to assist in transition during the winter months. This is not an easy job, but the tools are in place for the passionate and practiced candidate to succeed.

Responsibilities: 
  • Prepare, oversee, and manage CSA program, farmers markets, on-farm sales opportunities and restaurant accounts
  • Operate farm plans within budget, establish a formalized business plan.
  • Plan, manage, and execute planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, and cultural management of all crops.
  • Oversee disease and insect pest management.
  • Purchase farm supplies and seeds.
  • Maintain detailed farm records.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Recruit, and manage seasonal interns/apprentices.
  • Train staff in the safe use of equipment and tools.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with all Burge employees to maintain Burge Club standards.
  • Publish CSA newsletter, update social media, and contribute to farm website.
   Experience Required:

  • 3 to 5 years of organic fruit and vegetable production.
  • History of CSA and farmers market management
  • Understanding of agricultural principles such as: whole farm planning, crop rotations, integrated pest management, cultural management of perennial crops and tree fruit, cover cropping, soil and plant sciences,
  • Experience running and maintaining farm vehicles, equipment, hoophouses and greenhouses.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Experience in business management
  • Experience in crop planning and budgeting

  • A positive upbeat attitude and willingness to be flexible with a commitment to achieving long-term goals and visions.
  • Able to multi-task is a must. The farm is comprised of several separate fields that all have to be managed effectively
  • Able to work with a sense of urgency.
  • Creative and high-energy.
  • Ability to communicate cordially, professionally and effectively with Burge employees and club members.
  • Must be able to manage people effectively.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to take responsibility for all farm activities.
 Compensation:
