Crew Leader for 2015 Bending Bridge Farm

  • Date Posted October 21, 2014
  • Location Mercersburg, PA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Full-Time
Job Description We are seeking one individual to serve as a crew leader on our vegetable farm from April through November 2015.   One season's experience on a vegetable farm is required.  Housing and part- time work will be available as early as February.

Established in 2009, Bending Bridge Farm produces certified organic vegetables on 12 acres. We distribute our produce year-round through a 100 member "market style" CSA, three DC-area farmers markets, and a local farmers' cooperative. The crew leader will work 4-5 days per week in beautiful rural central PA and spend one day each week in the city marketing organic produce at one of our DC-area farm-stands.

Employees are an integral part of our small farm operation and participate in the complete process of vegetable production from starting seeds to making sales. The crew leader will organize our crew of 3-5 seasonal employees and ensure that all tasks, including seeding, transplanting, irrigation, pest control, harvesting, and weeding, are completed smoothly and efficiently. Opportunities to assist with cultivation and tillage will also be available though will not be an integral part of day-to-day responsibilities. A primary responsibility of the crew leader is to set the pace while working with other members of the crew.  A sense of urgency and understanding of the importance of efficiency is a must.

Members of the Bending Bridge Farm crew are reliable,  self-motivated, and organized. Applicants should possess a strong work-ethic, an attention to detail, and good listening skills. Applicants should have a flexible, positive attitude,  a willingness to work in all weather conditions (heat, rain, cold), and a willingness to work more than 40 hours per week when necessary.  The work is physically demanding so good physical fitness and the ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly is a must.  If you share our love of fresh vegetables, long hours outdoors, and cheesy jokes, you will thrive as a member of our team!

We pay by the hour, based on experience. Crew leaders earn at least $1,200 per month.  Abundant food from the farm is always available and housing is provided in a comfortable 3-bedroom house less than a mile from farm headquarters. Compensation this position is How to apply
