Job Description
The Field and Facilities Manager is responsible for field and facilities maintenance to ensure productive day to day farm operations and overall safety of the organization. Excellent management skills are a requirement for this position. The individual will have an eye towards safety and improving efficiencies, will maintain a positive attitude, be competent, have proven time management skills and have a strong work ethic. The primary responsibilities of the Field and Facilities Manager will include: field prep and cultivation, cover cropping, direct seeding, irrigation installation and maintenance, maintaining organic records, grounds maintenance and equipment maintenance. Red Wiggler values innovative and sustainable scale appropriate farming techniques and uses an electric Allis Chalmers G cultivating tractor, walk behind BCS with harrow and roller crimper, along with a 37hp Kubota, 21hp Kubota with spader, rotivator, and plastic mulch layer. The Field and Facilities Manager will work closely with the Farm Manager to follow the overall farm plan as well as determine weekly priorities. The Field and Facilities Manager will keep a constant “to do” list based on not only the farm plan, but also by personally observing pests and diseases, noticing weed pressure, recognizing when tractor maintenance is needed, etc. The position requires flexibility and adaptability as weather and other factors can often affect the daily plan.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum 3 years experience on organic farms including experience on a farm of comparable size.
- Experience in safe operation and maintenance of farm equipment.
- Interest in working with adults with developmental disabilities and youth.
- Ability to plan, delegate, and organize work tasks. Goal and detail oriented.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organized work environment, demonstrating a commitment to safety.
- Self –starter, self-disciplined, quick to learn. Use time efficiently by learning what needs to be done and actively working to accomplish tasks with minimal instruction or assistance.
- Ability to follow and implement a comprehensive farm plan for 5 acres of vegetable production. Oversee plan improvements and optimizations.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, long hours when needed, and
perform physical farm labor. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. - Excellent communication skills, desire to work collaboratively as part of a larger team.
- Have a positive, enthusiastic, and supportive attitude. Willing to have fun with job.
Compensation
This is a full-time position with a flexible start date of Jan/Feb 2015. We offer a competitive salary, dependent upon experience. The benefits package includes health & dental insurance, life & disability insurance, 401K program and paid vacation/sick leave as well as a weekly vegetable share.
