2015 Organic Farm Intern/Apprentice Seed to Seed Farm
- Date Posted October 30, 2014
- Location Balsam Lake, WI
- Category Agriculture
- Job Type Internship/Apprentice
At Seed to Seed we have a unique model where we grow very large scale quantities of produce on a small scale farm. This means Peppers, Tomatoes, Kale (especially Kale) and cabbage get counted in the thousands of lbs not the hundreds. The model means we work extremely hard and at the end of the day get to rightfully feel extremely accomplished.
As an intern at Seed to Seed you will learn every aspect of vegetable production with the aim of getting you to a point where you can run your own farm within a few years. Interns will learn field planning, sales, greenhouse propagation, fertilizing schemes, irrigation, harvesting, cultivation, tractor skills amongst other. It is our goal to help you fill in your gaps in knowledge instead of just exploiting the skills you already have. For the right person there is also the possibility to lease land at Seed to Seed and use our equipment after working on the farm for 2 years - with the goal of getting your own farm up and running. We are lucky enough to live in an area that features the Hungry Turtle Farmer's Cooperative - of which we are a member. I will do my best to make sure you get to meet the other organic farmer's in the area so you can see a variety of operations in action.
Interns are paid 7.25/hour with a monthly deduction taken out for room and board. This means that your take home pay will average around $700/month after your food and housing have been paid for. For the right person, with substantial farming experience - additional compensation is possible. We realize that it is important to live and eat well while working long hours. Therefor, we provide all reasonable food and every intern has their own furnished room in a very nice and spacious house.
.
Farm work is both extremely difficult and rewarding. At Seed to Seed we are looking for interns who want to invest themselves in the work of the farm as much as the owner does. If you enjoy investing sweat equity, problem solving or just seeing what $10,000 of Heirloom Tomatoes looks like - we look forward to hearing from you.
