Job Description About Us:

Through the student gardens, the Stanford Educational Farm, and the Stanford Farm Stand, the Sustainable Food Program cultivates healthy food for the community and provides an experiential model of the food system for students. Our student interns and employees learn about sustainable food production methods, distribution, marketing and sales. In addition to providing broadly applicable business and gardening skills, the gardens, Farm, and Farm Stand build community through shared work and experience.

The O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm (SEF) is a new program of the School of Earth Sciences. The SEF is a 5-acre, ecologically managed, diversified organic farm that serves the campus and community as a multifaceted learning environment and living laboratory. The farm will provide Stanford students with multiple course-based, project, research, and extended learning opportunities while also serving the campus and the community as a beautiful and productive place to learn about sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Position Description:

The Stanford Educational Farm is seeking candidates for the Program Coordinator position. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about sustainable agriculture and interested in helping to start up a new farm and its programs. The Program coordinator will play an important role in developing farm programs including outreach to the campus and Bay Area communities, coordination of volunteer programs and special events, farm program communications, and assistance with farm marketing.

Individuals with experience in and a passion for program coordination, communications, sustainable agriculture, and an interest in working in a cooperative learning environment are encouraged to apply. This is a full-time, salaried position with excellent benefits.

Core Duties*:

Outreach and Volunteer Programs Coordination:
  • Develop and implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain external community and university relationships, and with other organizations and institutions involved in the program.
  • Develop and manage volunteer programs for the educational farm including a farm docent program; supervise farm program volunteers when appropriate
  • Develop and manage farm tour and field trip program and lead farm tours as needed
Communications:
  • Coordinate program communications including press releases and social media 
  • Work with webmaster(s) to maintain current and informative web presence 
  • Represent the Educational Farm program at campus-wide events and projects
  • Answer and respond knowledgeably to general emails, phone calls, and incoming mail
Events:
  • Organize and manage special events, workshops, and classes
  • Create publicity for events and coordinate event volunteers
  • Develop and implement error-proof system to respond to and prioritize requests for use of space and facilities at the farm
Program Organization, Record Keeping, and Data Entry:
  • Manage marketing of farm products with assistance of Facility and Production Mangers
  • Coordinate collection, compilation, and evaluation of program information, data and photographic archives
  • Enter data into farm information system repository and create responsive reporting capability
  • Order supplies as needed and manage purchase records
Other Duties:
  • Assist with farm operations and facility management as needed
  • Manage work spaces to keep them clean and well organized
  • Serve as liaison with relevant University offices (e.g., BLM, LBRE, H&S, Purchasing, other) to maintain safe facility

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Sustainable Agriculture, Environmental Studies or Sciences, or a relevant field preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in project, program, and/or organizational management
  • Excellent organizational skills, with ability to adjust priorities as the situation calls for
  • Supervisory experience with volunteers
  • Internet literacy, and proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience in and comfort with working in multicultural environments required
  • Experience working in sustainable agriculture a plus
Physical and Time Requirements:
  • The position requires some weekend and holiday work to support farm operations and programs
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pound maximum
