Job Description About the Farm:

The Chicago Lights Urban Farm is a ¾ acre farm, 11 blocks from Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The Farm empowers youth and community residents in the near north neighborhood to have inc creased economic opportunities through access to organic produce, nutritional education, work force training, and microenterprise development. It also provides a a safe sanctuary and programs for children and youth to learn about urban agriculture. The Farm grows a variety of annual and perennial crops, offers programming for children and youth ages 5 to 21, runs several microenterprises, including a CSA and Farmstand, holds several community events, and provides space for an allotment garden. It is accessible via the Chicago Brown Line CTA s stop-3 blocks away.

Position Description:

The Chicago Lights Urban Farm is hiring a part-time, seasonal Market Coordinator/Youth Program Educator position. The position will focus on marketing produce and working with crews of high school age youth. It will also offer hands-on experience in farm and marketing skills, and Farm-based education practices. The position is integral part of the Farm, as he/she will be working alongside staff, child and youth program participants, and volunteers. The w will need to be comfortable working g with people of all ages and need to be flexible and able to work in a dynamic, outdoor, and changing environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Market Coordinator will w work with the Associate Director and other staff to:
  • Prepare produce for markets and manage a weekly farmers market and/or wholesale accounts
  • Act as crew leader for the youth program when in session
  • Plant, water, weed, prune and harvest crrops
  • Participate in community outreach activities and work with volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned or needed 
Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience with gardening/urban farming and youth education
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Strong communication skills
  • Flexible availability
  • Valid Driver’s License (or ability/willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs and physical stamina to stand for long periods of time, including lifting and carrying heavy objects
  • Farm work requires physical and mental endurance, and days are spent outside in any weather
  • Able to shift gears quickly and efficiently
  • Comfortable operating as member of a team
  • Comfort and willingness to work in a multi-cultural and faith-based environment 
Schedule:
  • May 4 – October 17, 2015 (24 weeks)
  • Fridays 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Saturdays 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Exact days/hours may change and will be determined by supervisor. 
Compensation:
  • $11.00 -$12.00 per hour, depending on experience
  • 1 full share of vegetables (during employment dates).
  • Reimbursement of authorized supplies, materials and staff meals.
  • This is a seasonal position and does not qualify for medical or paid time off benefits.
