Head Green City Market Worker Tomato Mountain Farm

  • Date Posted April 17, 2015
  • Location Chicago, IL
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Part-Time
Job Description About Tomato Mountain:

We're a certified organic farm in Brooklyn, WI, about two hours north of the city, specializing in a wide variety of crops. On our 12 acres, we grow vegetables for over 500 CSA members in Chicago and supply a handful of the city's markets with some of the best tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, root crops and seedlings in the region. We also produce salsa, soups, and Bloody Mary Mix at the farm, and bring them into the city to sell at markets.

Our Chicago operation includes an office in Hermosa (west of Logan Square) where we base all markets and other sales activity.

About the position:

As a long-time vendor at the Green City Market, we're known for our high quality.

You'll be given a solid training on our products and methods; we foster an environment where asking questions is required. That said, you'll be quickly set up to take serious charge of our Green City Market presence, and need to be ready for the challenge! Within a few weeks of starting, you'll need to be ready to manage a small team at the market while also handling all the loading, unloading, setting up, tearing down, and inventory for each market.Hours are about 4:30-5am until around 2 or 3pm every Wednesday and Saturday, from early May through the end of October. The markets are hard work, but very satisfying!

Other hours are available, and we'd love to work with you in any capacity and time frame that you're available. We can also work to find year-round work to keep you busy when the outdoor market season comes to a close.

Pre-requisites and requirements:

- At least some farmers' market or very similar sales experience is required; it's a very particular type of work, and we need to be able to throw you into the mix quickly!
- Ability to lift 30+ pounds
- Willingness to hustle before, during and after the markets
- Attention to detail, especially regarding inventory and cash-handling
- Extra-solid self-direction
- Experience with managing staff
- Passion for local food

We're definitely looking to fill one position of this type, but might be interested in taking on a few other folks to improve our market presence around the city.

This is a great way to get involved with the local food world in Chicago -- you'll be in close contact with lots of other vendors who are working in this exciting environment.

If you're a passionate, self-starting person with Wednesday and Saturday availability, drop us a line.
