The Sterling College Sustainable Agriculture Garden Apprentice position is an experiential, immersive learning and leadership opportunity for a passionate, inspired, and enthusiastic individual ready to help teach Sterling College students how to manage a diversified year-round farm and live in a small close-knit college community.  The position begins July 1st, 2015.  The Sterling farm is a working, multi-faceted, living classroom that serves the entire Sterling College community.  The Garden Apprentice is the teacher and technician who engages in whole farm care to maximize educational opportunities.  The Apprentice's primary function at the College is to make this agricultural classroom available to the Sterling College curriculum and community.To create availability and functionality for our academics, the Apprentice will take responsibility for day to day management of five acres of Sterling Gardens and associated structures, work directly with the Sterling kitchen to provide food for meals, coordinate with faculty and staff to fulfill academic and other needs, and interface with the community through an educational lens.All of these duties the Apprentice performs with direct mentoring from the Sustainable Agriculture Faculty team and Farm Manager.
  • The Apprentice works with a team of six to twelve student employees.  She or he is responsible for supervising work crews and creating an educationally stimulating work setting, to facilitate completion of all crop management tasks.
  • The Apprentice coordinates with the faculty and staff to ensure the Sterling curriculum, kitchen, and garden is well supported throughout the seasons.  The Assistant interacts with crop production classes, helps supervise land management by students involved in independent studies in the gardens, and ensures availability of garden/land resources for research and other academic uses.
  • The Apprentice helps manage crop production, coordinate weekly harvest, manage hoophouses, maintain all gardens and related structures in an organized and aesthetically pleasing manner, and works directly with the Sterling kitchen to facilitate order placement and fulfillment.
  • The Apprentice acts as the voice of the Sterling Gardens, through community announcements and awarenesses, developing periodic on-farm events, and presentation of the Gardens to prospective students, community members and other visitors to the College.  This requires public speaking, informal presentations, garden tours, and attendance at agricultural events, both on- and off-campus.
  • The Apprentice specific responsibilities include tasks such as: teaching how to plant, cultivate, fertilize, harvest, clean and package a wide range of crops for kitchen use; installing irrigation systems; identifying and managing disease and pest problems; construction and maintenance of necessary fencing and season extension structures; management of perennial food crops; integration of herb, flower, vegetable and fruit crops into the food production system; preservation and processing of crops; food systems coordination for invoices, vegetable deliveries, and curriculum-kitchen connections; and record keeping and planning for production.  All of these tasks should be done with student involvement, and in concert with farm and academic goals.
Qualifications: Applicants should have experience teaching, preferably in a small-scale farm environment, have a demonstrated ability to work independently, and as a part of a team, have experience in managing a small diverse farm or a similar system and have completed a B.A. or B.S. program in an appropriate field by the start date of the hire. The Sterling Sustainable Agriculture Garden Apprentice is a 24-month renewable position with review after 6 months, that includes an $1000 monthly stipend, housing, meals, one three credit equivalent course per semester, and eligibility to enroll in Sterling College full-time employee benefits.  This compensation package is valued at over $2800 per month.  The position begins in early July 2015.
