Job Description KITCHEN MANAGER

ABOUT US
Vajrapani Institute for Wisdom Culture (VPI) is a secluded retreat center located in the stillness of the California Redwoods. Our purpose is to inspire deep spiritual work by providing supportive conditions. Both retreaters and staff members from all religious traditions are nurtured by the energy of our blessed land, holy objects, and visiting teachers. VPI is associated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an international network of over 150 centers founded by Lama Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

The full-time Kitchen Manager directs and leads the Kitchen department in meeting both retreater and staff needs as it relates to meal service and kitchen organization.
This position is a precious opportunity to share one's culinary skills while connecting with a community of dedicated spiritual practitioners.

Kitchen Philosophy: Responsible for providing a meditative atmosphere in the kitchen that allows a calm, peaceful and loving energy to flow into and through the food. The vision and intention is to cultivate a sense of a pervading peacefulness/serenity so that anyone who steps into the kitchen or dining area feels supported and nurtured.

Food Service: Providing wholesome, nutritious, balanced, vegetarian food; delivering meals to cabin retreaters on time; maintaining the VPI Food Policy by responding to the needs of those with food allergies.

QUALIFICATIONS
We prefer candidates who value wisdom, loving-heartedness, spaciousness, harmony, clarity, & trust. Such qualities in action include the following:
• Maintains inner calm & a sense of being centered among busy kitchen activity
• Oversees & communicates skillfully with the kitchen team
• Provides guidance & clarity to the kitchen team through training & organization of kitchen duties
• Works efficiently while paying attention to the details of every retreat
• Sustains harmony when the kitchen environment becomes faster paced during larger retreats
• Enjoys cooking & has knowledge of vegetarian health & nutrition
• At least two years cooking experience required

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain communication systems for the kitchen team -- group info. sheets, kitchen charts, etc
• Manage kitchen staff through scheduling and regular department meetings
• Order all food items and arrange for in-town pick-up when needed
• Coordinate kitchen cleaning duties among the kitchen team
• Prepare vegetarian meals for group retreats & for staff lunches
• Prepare and deliver meal bags to solitary ridge retreaters
• When necessary, accommodate food allergies & certain special needs (e.g., vegans, precept days)
• Plan menus and update menu files
• Maintain food storage in the kitchen, solitary ridge retreat area, & Teacher House
• Present "Working Meditation Guidelines" to group retreaters
• Orient new employees & volunteers to the "Community Kitchen Use Guidelines"
• Train new kitchen staff & volunteers, as needed
• Improve kitchen systems & take on related projects, as needed
• Attend weekly staff meetings & quarterly staff community meetings

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
This is a full-time, 35-hour per week position. The hourly rate is $10.50/hr with subsidized room and board (higher hourly rate if living off-site). Benefits include dental insurance, and up to $50 coverage for existing health care premiums after 3 months, as well as paid vacation. There is ample opportunity to develop one's spiritual practice, including our annual Winter Retreat, where staff are supported to do a personal retreat.
