Position
Do you have knack for identifying a compelling story, the interviewing skills to draw that out, and the written communication skills to get it down in writing? Wholesome Wave’s Communications Team seeks to build a cohort of Story Gathering Interns and is searching for an intern to collect stories in New Haven County and Hartford. This cohort of interns will help identify, gather, and develop persuasive stories about our key partners, including federal nutrition benefit consumers, patients, farmers, doctors, and community-based organization leaders. These stories will be used in narratives about the organization’s work, and will help influence case studies, as well as funder, policy, and media relations.
Interns will be given credit for the stories they produce on Wholesome Wave’s website and in any publications the story may be placed. You will gain skills in non-profit communications, community outreach, interviewing, construction of compelling narratives, and food system work.
The intern will report to Communications & Public Outreach Senior Manager, Ashley Gaudiano, and Associate, Fiona McBride. Responsibilities
Training:
- Participate in web-based, pre-internship story collection training led by Communications Team (2 hours).
- Conducts weekly check-ins with Communications team via Google Hang Out or Skype.
- Visits farmers market sites weekly to collect interviews and photographs during the internship period. The intern will need to travel to both Hartford and New Haven once a week.
- Works collaboratively and respectively with local partners to arrange interviews, ensure policies and procedures are followed.
- Identifies appropriate interviewees, including consumers, farmers, Wholesome Wave partners, etc.
- Takes photographs at the sites based around the Communications Team’s expectations.
- Complies with story collection and storytelling structure outlined by the team.
- Writes stories by deadline to be edited by Communications Team.
- Completes a total of 12 finalized stories for use on the Wholesome Wave website.
Skills required:
- Strong written communication skills.
- Positive attitude with strong interpersonal and rapport-building skills.
- Sensitivity to privacy and ability to uphold utmost respect for the confidentiality of all interviewees.
- Experience and/or interest in working with diverse populations.
- Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal oversight.
- Base-level understanding of the work of Wholesome Wave, contextualized within the food movement.
- Punctual with deadlines.
- Basic photography and editing capabilities.
Access to appropriate transportation to market sites in Hartford and New Haven; Flexibility to make site visits during the week, including evenings, and weekends – hours can vary week to week and will be set in conjunction with Wholesome Wave team, but intern must be able to visit New Haven and Hartford each once a week.
Compensation, Time, and Classification The Story Gathering Intern position is part-time, 10 hours per week for 8 weeks.Start Date: First week of August, 2015Travel, weekly, to New Haven, CT and Hartford, CT necessary.This position offers a stipend of $500
