Job Description We're Chicago's premier local foods hub - public market, butcher shop and café at 1427 W. Willow St. (near North Ave. and Elston) in Chicago. We're taking a fresh approach to food distribution, building relationships with producers and chefs so they can concentrate on what they do best: farming and preparing delicious local foods.

Job Duties:
The Produce Lead ensures that all produce in the Public Market and Wholesale Departments are accurately accounted for, received and maintained to the highest quality standards and ensures that produce is purchased and stocked in the retail store in a timely and effective manner.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Manage Produce Ordering for the Public Market           
    • Inventory Produce to ensure produce meets quality standards and that the Market is fully stocked with the freshest produce at all times
    • Purchase Produce from the Wholesale Department and Produce Distributors that meets customer needs and Local Foods standards
    • Coordinate with Purchasing Department to achieve shrink, margin and customer satisfaction goals
    • Manage product catalog and communicate new or updated items to the Public Market Team
    • Assist with setting proper pricing for all products and the creation of new products and product categories
    • Manage Invoicing and Billing in Wholesale and Public Market Operating Systems
    • Pick Orders from the Wholesale Department and Stock Produce in the Market
    • Manage and Resolve all Billing and System Issues
  • Receiving, Stocking and Merchandising for the Public Market
    • Ensure all items are checked in, handled and processed in accordance with standard receiving procedures.
    • Process invoices,  making sure to follow up on credits, quality concerns and pricing  discrepancies
    • See that product is properly stored.
    • Keep shelves abundantly stocked
    • Create visually  appealing displays
    • Ensure all products on display shelf are of the highest quality and are properly culled.
    • Maintain  high standard of safety and cleanliness in work  and display  area
    • Keep all work areas clean and organized
    • Maintain signage to ensure it is accurate at point of sale, properly programmed at register and represents proper production practices, as well as farm-source identification
  • Customer Service
    • Ensure satisfaction of customers needs
    • Handle customer requests, suggestions, complaints and questions.
    • Create and maintain a daily sampling program
    • Take and process special orders.
    • Be available to fill in at register during times scheduled on bar graph and during times store is overly busy.
    • Be available to answer customer’s questions and show them to products throughout store. 
    • Be available to answer phone during busy times.
  • Personnel
    • Ensure that new produce staff is properly trained.
    • Ensure general grocery staff is trained to particular tasks relevant to the produce department.
    • Supervise employees to assure that tasks are completed thoroughly and efficiently.
  • Wholesale Produce Inventory Management
    • Stock product using FIFO inventory management (first in, first out) and ensure storage is well organized for effective inventory management and picking of product
    • Check Quality of all product on a daily basis and effectively communicate near dated product to Purchasing and Sales team in an effort to minimize spoilage
    • Track and report product spoilage on a daily basis. 
    • Assist with training Wholesale Operations Staff on storage requirements and Quality Standards for all products
    • Work to support the overall goals of the team by delivering our customers the highest quality product
  • Assist with Purchasing tasks including the execution of wholesale Ordering and the reconciliation of invoices
    • Help build and maintain long term relationships with our extensive network of Farmers
    • Suggest and implement solutions for receiving & inventory issues
  • Contribute to a clean and organized warehouse and maintain the highest levels of personal hygiene and workplace sanitation
  • Support an injury-free workplace
 
Requirements
  • Two years relevant experience preferred
  • Thorough Knowledge of industry Quality Control standards
  • Working knowledge of buying, pricing systems and other applicable programs for purchasing
  • Basic math and spatial reasoning skills and ability to operate warehouse equipment
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Excel; experience with distribution or ERP software a plus
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize
  • Must be able to work flexible hours depending on the work load
  • Must be able to work in a refrigerated cooler for and extended time at 35 degrees
