  • Date Posted November 27, 2015
  • Location Tupelo, MS
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Full-Time
Job Description About Us:

Native Son Farm is a diversified family farm in Northeastern Mississippi growing certified naturally grown annual vegetables and strawberries for our CSA, farmstand and restaurant customers. As one of the oldest and the largest CSA farm in Mississippi, we are constantly pushing the envelope of sustainable agriculture in the deep south and are looking for dedicated farm workers and managers to join us for the 2016 growing season. We are in our late 20's and 2016 will be our seventh year of owning and operating our farm and my tenth year as an organic farmer.

The Opportunities:

We have 2 management and 3 worker positions available on our farm. Our farm is a place of diversity, integrity and professionalism and we take great pride in the quality of our produce and farm work. After starting in 2010 with a BCS on 3/4 acre of family land, we have grown to become a bit more mechanized and use tools such as a chisel plow, bed shaper, high tunnels, plastic layer, 3 row seeder and waterwheel transplanter to manage the workload. We now farm on two pieces of ground that are 3.5 miles apart in the Tupelo city limits and will be growing around 15 acres of vegetables and 15 acres of cover crops for our CSA, farmers market and restaurant customers in 2016.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in organic vegetable farming, as with most things in life, you will get out as much as you are willing to put in. Workers will have the opportunity to gain proficiency in or continue to perfect tasks such as: plant propagation and greenhouse management, direct seeding, planting, transplanting, high tunnel production, tractor operation, harvesting, washing, marketing and CSA management. Amanda and I have two toddlers and throughout the season, workers will get a realistic idea of what it takes to run a diversified family farm.

As the board president of the Mississippi Sustainable Agriculture Network I can keep interested workers up to date on statewide workshops, conferences and networking opportunities. Our farm is a great stepping stone for experienced farm workers that are looking to gain proficiency at growing in southern soils before beginning their own farms, or for a few key individuals looking for a long term management position. 4 of our last 6 employees have started or are currently starting farms in Mississippi and Louisiana. Come grow with us!

The ideal applicant is interested in pursuing a career in sustainable farming in the Southeast. We are looking for individuals that are honest, strongly motivated, possess good communication skills and have a positive attitude. Farming is hard but rewarding, applicants should enjoy physical labor and find purpose through doing good work.  This is an especially great opportunity for individuals that are looking to acquire more advanced knowledge and practice before getting their farm started but we will consider all applicants. Skilled farm workers looking for a change of scenery and a place to make a significant and lasting impact, come join us. Compensation this position is How to apply
