Farm Apprentice Mountain View Farm

Job Description Our farm is located on a 900-acre nature preserve (10 miles of hiking trails, ponds, creeks, etc.) 10 minutes from Harpers Ferry, WV. We cultivate 4 acres of Certified Organic vegetables with particular attention paid to soil health. We raise laying hens, broiler hens, goats, sheep and pigs. We attend 3 weekly farmers markets in DC and sell to restaurants in town. Our farm is a founding member of Chesapeake CRAFT and we also host other educational opportunities on our farm during the season. We currently have one position left that starts on, or close to, May 1st.

Internship Starts: April 1 2016
Internship Ends: Novemebr 2016
Number of interns: 3
Minimum Length of Stay: 6 Months (shorter position also available)

Meals: Meals will be on your own. You are welcome to any farm produce, eggs, dairy, or trading with other farms at market.

Skills Desired: Farm experience a plus but not necessary. We look for organized, flexible, reliable, curious people. Any additional skills also a plus.

Educational Opportunities: There will be many opportunities for farm tours, conferences, and interactions with other local farms. We are members of Chesapeake CRAFT. We also host many farm and non-farm events at Blue Ridge Center.

Stipend: starting at $1000/ month 

Housing: Housing is in cabins on-site (electricity but no running water)  Indoor kitchen, living area, internet, library, showers, etc in adjacent building.

The work will involve all aspects of running a small scale, direct market organic vegetable farm. We work 5-6 days a week and attend market during the week and on the weekends. In addition, interns will be expected to be involved in all areas of animal husbandry. We are open to sharing all that we know. We expect hard work, attention to detail, diligence, flexibility, and ability to see a whole picture of the farming operation.
