Cheesemaking Intern/Apprentice Green Dirt Farm

  • Date Posted February 11, 2016
  • Location Weston, MO
  • Category Agriculture / Culinary
  • Job type Internship/Apprentice
Company description Green Dirt Farm was founded in 2008 to give form to our passion for good, clean food that is sustainably and humanely produced. Stretching over lush grassland in northwestern Missouri, our farm is a sheep dairy that believes grass-fed sheep are the happiest and most productive; so, we take great pride in the care and well-being of our animals. Happy animals give us great quality milk, that we then turn into delicious cheese. Internship description Green Dirt Farm is a small, award winning sheep dairy and creamery in Weston, Missouri. Our quest is to produce the highest quality cheese using milk from happy, healthy animals. We are currently accepting applications for Cheesemaking Interns for the 2019 season.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about making handcrafted cheese. Work in the Cheese Kitchen is fun and rewarding; but it is SERIOUSLY HARD WORK. Cheesemaking involves lots of cleaning (we occasionally joke that we are glorified dishwashers) and menial tasks that are a crucial part of production. The hours can be long and the work difficult; but if that doesn’t scare you away, Green Dirt Farm can be a place for you to push your boundaries, grow creatively, and gain a unique skillset.

Position Description: This position involves receiving milk, packaging product, cleaning equipment, flipping cheese, washing cheese, assisting with cheesemaking procedures, and more.

There may be an occasional shift working in our retail shop, helping out at a farmer's market, assisting with farm chores, or working at one of our on-farm events. We are a small business, everyone lends a hand to every part!

Interns agree to a 4 month commitment and receive an hourly wage. This opportunity can evolve into long-term employment, if mutually agreeable.

Housing:
On Farm, rustic, dormitory-style housing is available. The space houses up to 4 people, (2 per room) with a shared bathroom, common space, and kitchen.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Diligent attention to cleanliness and sanitation, as well as an understanding of the need for these practices
  • Positive attitude, especially in the face of adversity or failure
  • A team-oriented mindset; ability to communicate, ask questions, voice concerns, and work to problem-solve
  • Ability to be meticulous and detail oriented
  • An eagerness to learn
  • Ability to work 10 hours on your feet
  • Schedule flexibility and willingness to work long hours
  • Ability to lift 50lbs repeatedly
  • Willingness to work under uncomfortable conditions; including hot and humid areas, as well as coolers and walk in freezers
  • Commitment to making a high quality, artisan product
  • Must have a valid drivers license
Nice to have, but not required:
  • Previous food-handling experience
  • Familiarity with HACCP
  • Cheesemaking knowledge
  • Dairy or agricultural background
  • An intense and unequivocal passion for all things cheese!
