Company description With features in Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, and more, Goose the Market is a full-service butcher shop and specialty food and wine market near downtown Indianapolis. Offering a carefully curated selection of good, clean, and fair foods, the Goose's shelves are stocked with farmstead cheeses, cut to order fresh meats, charcuterie, local produce, dry goods, beer, wine, and more from near and far. A menu of sandwiches, soups, and small plates changes daily. Job description The Market Manager works closely with all staff to continually fulfill Goose the Market's commitment to good, clean, and fair foods and exceptional front-line customer service. As the leader of all market operations, the ideal Market Manager has:
  • at least three years experience in a food related business such as a retail storefront or butchering, farming, cooking, etc.
  • at least two years management experience in a business with top line annual revenues of at least $2-5 million
  • a solid understanding of and demonstrated support for good, clean, and fair food
  • excellent planning and problem solving skills
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • excellent leaderships and mentoring skills 
  • excellent event management skills
  • experience using Quickbooks 
  • experience with inventory management of a perishable product
 General Responsibilities
  • Holds all general manager responsibilities
  • Upholds and enforces Goose’s quality standards and guest satisfaction
  • Reserves the right to use any means necessary within reason to ensure guest satisfaction
  • Supervision and management of all operations
  • Key holder with alarm code access
  • Cash handling
  • Writing budgets and monitoring the budget and profit margins
  • Scheduling of the entire team
  • Supervision and management of purchasing and receiving
  • POS knowledge and training
Purchasing and Receiving Responsibilities
  • Upholds the high quality, wholesomeness, and freshness of products
  • Monitors and manages deliveries including following up on corrections
  • Oversees product displays, labels, and par levels
  • Designs product displays and directs staff in implementing and maintaining them
  • Places orders in accordance with budget and par levels
  • Issues purchase orders and check orders against approved purchase orders
  • Researches new and existing products and curates offerings according to Goose’s standards, seasonality, and quality
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Is a solid role model
  • Encourages growth and education among associates
  • Sets expectations for associates, effectively communicates these expectations, follows up to review performance, and holds associates accountable
  • Provides associates with periodic feedback including positive reinforcement and constructive criticism
  • Is firm, fair, and consistent in management
  • Is proactive rather than reactive
  • Remains calm, cool, and collected at all times
  • Schedules employee shifts in accordance with budget and demands of the business
  • Confirms that associates are working their scheduled shifts and provides reasoning if schedule changes need to be made
  • Promptly and effectively handles employee discipline
  • Authority to handle employee situations that require immediate attention including
    • Call offs and replacements for call offs
    • Tardiness
    • Failure to cooperate
    • Inappropriate actions from associates towards guests or other associates
and communicates with Goose owners if these situations arise and the actions taken. 

Product Responsibilities
  • Ensures that products are being labeled, rotated, and stored correctly including directing staff to make any necessary changes
  • Provides materials necessary to market new products to the director of marketing
  • Insures that products are of the highest quality and find outlet if they does not meet these standards
  • Checks par levels and quality of products in sandwich station, barista station, enoteca, and cases
  • Oversees and monitors production schedules
  • Trains staff on products including tastings
Sanitation Responsibilities
  • Required to be Serv Safe certified
  • Required to have a valid alcohol beverage service permit + server training class certificate
  • Upholds sanitation standards of the market
  • Assists health department with any questions in the event of an inspection
  • Leads staff in preparation for inspections
Performance Requirements
  • Average 50 hours per week (typically five days per week and ten hours per day)
  • Leads by example in uniform, personal hygiene, and attitude
  • Leads by example in work ethic
