The job is two-fold: being the Program Assistant of the African Heritage and Health program, and being the Office Manager in Boston.
Most of your time will be spent as the African Heritage & Health Program Assistant, working directly with the AH&H Program Manager, overseeing the coordination of our “A Taste of African Heritage” (ATOAH) classes, tracking student success, and training new volunteer instructors, supporting them throughout their delivery of the ATOAH program.
The ideal Program Assistant will be a highly organized people person who is self-motivated, has excellent communication skills, is a problem-solving optimist, can hold teachers accountable for their classes and reports, is flexible and willing to help with special projects, understands the program’s mission and can effectively educate others about it, and enjoys cheering teachers and communities on, all while making a positive impact on public health. The Program Assistant will have several responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Tracking new teacher sign ups from the online Teacher Sign Up Form;
- Sharing informational calls with new volunteers to provide a brief overview of the program and to informally interview each teaching candidate;
- Providing each volunteer with the necessary materials, including the Teacher’s Training Guide, promotional and teaching materials;
- Assisting teachers in coordinating classes and follow-up workshops, and in recruiting participants; answering any questions they have about the lessons; providing general staff support throughout;
- Tracking class progress by collecting student survey and health metrics evaluation data;
- Ensuring that teachers submit their evaluation data at the end;
- Sending out reminders, deadlines and other information to teachers;
- Managing Oldways’ ATOAH Facebook Group page.

- Contributing to AH&H Blogs
- Receiving and logging prospective student interest, sharing with teachers in their locations
- Fulfilling orders for our online store
- Fulfilling orders for our programs, especially African and Latin American Health and Heritage cooking classes and Cheese of Choice memberships
- Keeping track of postage and going to the Post Office
- Maintaining office supplies and equipment
- Other associated administrative tasks as needed
This position is full-time. Our offices in Boston’s Back Bay are informal. We don't wear ties or heels, and there's a company dog. Yet the atmosphere is intense and totally professional; each staff member is expected to take full responsibility for his or her projects.
