  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Founded in 1974, the David School is located in the small community of David, Kentucky, from which it takes its name. The mission of The David School is to provide a comprehensive educational program for Appalachian high school dropouts and at risk youths who have limited financial resources and the potential to succeed in a non-traditional setting. Through individualized attention, we give our students the opportunity to experience success and to serve their community.  As a nonprofit educational facility, the David School relies on the kindness of everyday people to give what they can. Over the years thousands of generous people from all over the world have pitched in their time or money so our students could acquire the education most of us take for granted. Project Description: Building upon our 40-year wood shop program and our newer student kitchen and garden program, The Inch by Inch Project is a greatly expanded interdisciplinary academic and vocational opportunity for grade 9 through 12 students. We are greatly enlarging, in particular, our garden program. The project will allow students the opportunity to gain specific technical skills in woodworking and gardening, develop valuable life skills including business and work experience, support and enhance their math, science, reading and writing abilities in experiential ways, and celebrate their Appalachian cultural heritage.

Garden Manager Position: The purpose of our garden is to promote and teach sustainability practices among our students and their families. Food grown at school is used for our lunch program and for production of our signature hot sauces. The Project Manager will be charged with the oversight of all aspects of operations and production, compliance with kitchen certification and food preparation codes, small business development and management, and marketing of the products for sale. Other essential skills include the ability to work effectively with both teachers and teenage students. Our business is “student run” so the Garden Manager works with students daily. In addition, the Garden Manager will teach a gardening/sustainability class and health. This includes teaching small groups or tutoring and may include classes up to 10 students.
