In Jamie&#8217;s own words, his students &#8216;learn\u00a0<em>how to be effective advocates by doing.&#8217;\u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>When did you know that you wanted to work in food?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The questions.\u00a0 I wanted to work in the world of food after learning how our food system implicates several of the deepest questions humans face:\u00a0 What should our relationship to nature look like?\u00a0 What is justice, and what basic human rights do people deserve, if any?\u00a0 What should the relationship between human rights and political lines be?\u00a0 Are humans different from other animals, in terms of how we should be treated?\u00a0 What are the greatest causes of, and solutions for, physical suffering?\u00a0 What role should governments play in securing and promoting public health?\u00a0 What are the tensions between corporate and public interests, and how should they be resolved?\u00a0 And, ultimately, how do we progress toward building a world that is food secure?<\/p>\n<p>The vision.\u00a0 On top of being interested in these enormous food-system related questions, I&#8217;ve always felt some longing to live in a society where life revolves around small, pastoral communities, where pastoral communities revolve around close-knit, multi-generational families, where these families revolve around shared values and experiences, and where these values and experiences revolve around things that matter: relationships, community, nature (including our physical engagement with it, exploration and understanding of it, and sense of connection to it), food, health, ethics, suffering and death.\u00a0 One of my motivations for working in food systems advocacy was to help build the world I want to live in.<\/p>\n<p>Integration.\u00a0 There\u2019s a notion that the society I\u2019ve just described is \u201cundeveloped,\u201d one of the past, or somehow mutually exclusive with &#8220;progress.&#8221; \u00a0I disagree.\u00a0 I want to help systemically integrate our evolving know-how into the rebuilding or augmenting of the small communities that gave and give us meaning and stability in the first place.\u00a0 Let\u2019s mix the \u201cold\u201d and the \u201cnew.\u201d\u00a0 What does that look like?\u00a0 Our food system is a great platform for concretely addressing the question.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How did you get your current good food job?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I resigned from a law firm in New York City to volunteer for AmeriCorps in Vermont.\u00a0 During my AmeriCorps year, I started working on a documentary about how changes in American consumer values impacted Vermont&#8217;s agriculture economy, leaving many small dairy farmers of a different value-generation behind.\u00a0 How do these now elderly farmers interpret the meaning of these changes?\u00a0 For background on the state&#8217;s ag economy, I called the Director of Vermont Law School&#8217;s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems (Laurie Ristino) and asked her for an interview.\u00a0 She agreed, but when I showed up to meet her, she\u2018d forgotten what the appointment was about and said something like, &#8220;Oh, I\u2019m sorry, I thought you were here for the job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What job?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Always be ready to adapt!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How did your\u00a0previous work or life experience prepared you for a good food job?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have a mixed-bag background of international and domestic human rights and corporate legal work, a natural inclination to assume that I know very little about anything, and a competing desire to learn and try everything.\u00a0 As a result of my background and personality, I lean toward (1) seeing food, among other things, as a system that interrelates with other systems, and (2) taking humble, collaborative and practical approaches to problem solving.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve found that having an open, collaborative, practical and entrepreneurial mindset is crucial in such a complex, inter-disciplinary, global field.\u00a0 For example: food insecurity is not caused or resolvable by one thing.\u00a0 We need multiple perspectives and coordinated strategic efforts to address it, to say the least.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What was the greatest obstacle you had to overcome in pursuing your good food job dream?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Deciding to momentarily let go of financial security.\u00a0 As I mentioned before, from 2008-2012, I worked at a large law firm in New York City doing fascinating legal work on headline-news cases with fantastic colleagues, and making what seemed to be oodles of money.\u00a0 During that time, though, I didn\u2019t feel fulfilled, and knew I wouldn\u2019t feel fulfilled until I was doing something more fundamentally socially redeeming and living in a more natural environment.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0started looking\u00a0for do-gooder legal work\u00a0in Vermont, a former home of mine and landscape\u00a0I\u2019ve always connected to. \u00a0After months and months of looking for\u00a0the right kid of\u00a0job but not finding it,\u00a0I\u00a0started to feel\u00a0completely\u00a0trapped in the rat race. \u00a0At some point,\u00a0I\u00a0realized\u00a0that joining AmeriCorps was a possible off-ramp. \u00a0It could (1) take me to Vermont\u00a0and (2) allow me to perform community service for a stipend and bare-bones health care while\u00a0I\u00a0(3) continued searching for meaningful legal work. \u00a0The\u00a0risks:\u00a0letting go of a secure, great salary, and facing the significant chance that there wouldn&#8217;t be job-light at the end of the AmeriCorps tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, though, and perhaps naively,\u00a0I\u00a0chose adventure and the pursuit of meaning over the rat race, and am already so deeply grateful that\u00a0I\u00a0did. \u00a0Through AmeriCorps,\u00a0I\u00a0wound my way to this great job. \u00a0Even better, though, my first weekend in VT,\u00a0I\u00a0met the amazing woman who\u2019s now my wife. \u00a0In retrospect, it\u2019s like my whole life was waiting for me just around the corner; all\u00a0I had to do was have the courage to get up and go look for it.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Name one\u00a0positive thing that a former employee taught you that you continue to appreciate?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dan Connolly is the Managing Partner of the New York City office of the law firm Bracewell &amp; Giuliani LLP.\u00a0 He was my boss and mentor for four years.\u00a0 To me, he exemplified how being a good person is a prerequisite to being a good manager and a good attorney.\u00a0 I try to emulate him in my work running the Food &amp; Agriculture Clinic.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What can you identify as the greatest opportunities in food right now?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are so many meaningful opportunities in food systems advocacy right now.\u00a0 Here are just three:<\/p>\n<p>1) Food systems are not yet fully perceived for their significance in terms of both revealing and impacting human choices and behavior.\u00a0 We\u2019re scratching the surface on the relationship between what we eat and our health.\u00a0 Likewise, we\u2019re scratching the surface on the relationship between our food system (production to consumption) and the environment.\u00a0 What about the impact of the rules governing commodities or agriculture-based derivative financial products on international food prices?\u00a0 Read <em>Bet the Farm<\/em> by Frederick Kaufman.\u00a0 What about the tension between intellectual property rights (i.e. companies owning patents on seeds) and antitrust concerns (i.e. companies consolidating the commercial seed market)?\u00a0 Read Diana Moss&#8217;s analyses of the issue.\u00a0 Today, advocates and educators still have historic opportunities to expose the significance of food itself.<\/p>\n<p>2) Animal welfare.\u00a0 We still think it&#8217;s ok to treat animals with cruelty for the sake of food production.\u00a0 Historic opportunities remain to challenge and change &#8220;factory farms&#8221; of any scale.\u00a0 The fact is, we kill to live, whether we&#8217;re consuming animals or plants.\u00a0 However, we should be ashamed of treating other beings inhumanely while they&#8217;re alive.\u00a0 We can do better than that, and legal advocacy has a significant role to play in improving the welfare of animals raised for consumption, as long as this practice continues.\u00a0 Read Peter Singer\u2019s <em>Writing on an Ethical Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>3) State food system initiatives.\u00a0 Check out Vermont&#8217;s <a href=\"www.vtfarmtoplate.com\" target=\"_blank\">Farm to Plate Initiative<\/a>.\u00a0 Likewise, read about <a href=\"www.farmtoschool.org\/Resources\/F2S-Survey-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the national growth of state farm to school policies and programs<\/a>.\u00a0 Across the U.S., we&#8217;re just starting to identify and connect the dots of our local food systems, and to create the infrastructure for mobilizing these dots, once connected.\u00a0 In doing so, we\u2019re democratizing the food system state-by-state, locality-by-locality.\u00a0 By democratizing the food system, we&#8217;re slowly democratizing discussion on the host of issues the food system implicates.\u00a0 Both in your professional and your consumer lives, there is room to participate.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>If you could be compensated for your work with something other than money, what would it be?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Health and happiness for loved ones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jamie supervises a Food &amp;
