\nWhat attracted you to a good food job? <\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n
<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s nothing more important than being an eater right now–our food choices have such wide reaching effect. \u00a0We can preserve natural resources, support local economy, promote food security and more with the power of our forks. So that’s essentially what I do–I eat and talk and write about it. \u00a0Through my books, workshops and website I try to give other eaters the tools they need to find and support local ag–to reclaim our food chain one bite at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you get your current good food job? <\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

I was mouthing off to anyone who would listen to me about how they had to support local ag–join a CSA<\/a>, eat grass-fed meat, find pastured eggs–until an editor at a cocktail party said, “Hey, you should write a book about that.” \u00a0Maybe they were just trying to get me off my soapbox but I did wind up writing that book. \u00a0The Real Food Revival<\/a> was published in 2005 and I’ve been telling eaters about all the good stuff there is to eat ever since.<\/span> <\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

How did your previous work or life experience prepare you for a good food job?<\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

I used to work in .com, putting together sales strategies and selling websites to big name brands that were looking to go digital. \u00a0That’s essentially what I do now, except instead of a room of suits, other eaters are my audience and I’m not trying to sell them some futuristic technology, I’m selling them a better food future. \u00a0It’s great to be able to use my love of Power Point for good.<\/span><\/p>\n

What advice do you have for others in search of a good food job?<\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

When I was looking to switch out of my corporate work someone gave me a bit of advice–tell everyone you know what you want and they will help you find it. \u00a0I think there’s great value in that on a number of levels. \u00a0First, it makes you articulate your goal to yourself and others so you find yourself honing your thinking, broadening your thinking, or at least simply thinking about your objective repeatedly which is a great exercise–it really helps to clarify your target. \u00a0But I also think that we really do like to see someone’s dreams come true and if a person is really passionate and putting themselves and their hopes out in the world, there’s some sort of primal response that kicks in–we really want to help and will offer our thinking, advice and contacts to give them a leg up.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you could be compensated for your work with something other than money, what would it be?<\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

No surprise there–I often work for (really good!) food.<\/span><\/p>\n
