Farm Worker Laughing Stock Farm

  • Date Posted June 26, 2017
  • Location Freeport, ME
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description Laughing Stock Farm is a 12 acre, certified organic, family owned farm in Freeport, Maine, growing over 200 different varieties of vegetables, plus flowers, pigs, laying hens, and pet goats.  We have been farming for 20 years.  We sell to our 150+ member CSA and to over a dozen restaurants throughout southern Maine. Job description

We have an opening for one more worker, and housing is available if desired.  The season typically goes to Thanksgiving.  While staying the full season is preferred, it is not required.

Vegetable work includes seeding, watering seedlings, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing.

We do what work we can with tractors, so experience with tilling, bed shaping, cover cropping, and cultivating with the tractor is possible for those with the inclination for this type of work.

Animal care is a possibility for those who are interested.

There are always some construction and infrastructure projects for those who are interested in gaining a broader view of the tasks we do.

Workers have the opportunity to learn as much as they want to of everything we do. We aim to train a skilled workforce, with workers learning techniques and concepts to be both quick and accurate with the work they do. We try to have a workplace where people can be challenged and gain skills and a sense of pride in job well done. We always try to hire a group of people who will enjoy seeing each other when they arrive at work in the morning, and be happy to spend the day together. We want employees who will be engaged in the work, committed to a profitable season, and interested in learning more about organic farming.

Our work week is about 45 hours, Monday through Friday, plus a rotation of one weekend per month. We understand that people have lives beyond the farm, and we know that most people will want some days off here and there throughout the season so we try our best to accommodate everyone.

Wages are $10 to $11, commensurate with experience. We are happy to hire people with any level of experience, including no experience. Employees get free vegetables and flowers. Eggs (when available) and pork may be purchased at cost.

Affordable housing is available. Employees can rent rooms in a separate house across the street from the farm. You get your own bedroom (furnished, if desired) and all heat, electricity, and wifi are included. There is a washer and dryer in the basement. No pets, no smoking in the house. Total occupancy of four in the house.

Freeport is located on the coast of Maine. There is a beach at high tide, as well as other places for ocean swimming, and other beaches a 45-minute drive. There are two state parks within 10 miles of the farm, and many trails throughout town. Freeport has a movie theater, a bar with music on weekend nights, and many restaurants. Portland is a 25-minute drive, or you can take the train from Freeport to Portland or Boston. You will have enough time off to enjoy a summer in Maine!
