Company description The Chattahoochee Nature Center, (CNC), is a non-profit in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia.  Our mission is "to connect people to nature."  We have 127 acres along the Chattahoochee River and feature native plant gardens, a vegetable garden, trails, 3 ponds, aviaries and beaver habitat, and a wildlife rehabilitation clinic.  We do extensive work in conservation.  Job description
The Chattahoochee Nature Center is seeking a Garden Coordinator for our Unity Vegetable Garden.  The Unity Vegetable Garden is a 1/4 acre food production garden whose primary mission is that of the CNC:  "to connect people to nature".  Volunteers amend the soil, plant and harvest produce and visitors visually explore and enjoy the beauty of the garden.  Other primary goals include donation and education.  The majority of our garden produce goes to the North Fulton Community Charities food bank.  Since its inception in 2010, the Unity Vegetable Garden has donated over 32 tons of food to this charity.  We educate our visitors about sound gardening practices and care of the garden eco-system with hands-on "as you work' teaching.

The Unity Vegetable Garden Coordinator does the following:

*Chooses year-round plant selections and develops a planting schedule
*Grows starts from seed in our greenhouse
*Develops a plan for soil health that includes testing, cover cropping, rotation, composting and fertilization
*Scouts for pest and disease issues and applies IPM solutions at the least toxic control possible
*Oversees harvest and transport of produce to NFCC
*Takes lead in directing corporate, school, and regular volunteers
*Performs duties as Greenhouse Technician and oversees irrigation schedule for plant holding areas
*Assists Development Director in writing grants for the garden
*Teaches occasionally and reaches out to the community
*As a team member of Horticulture staff, devotes a set number of hours weekly to work in the native gardens
*Takes part in plant sales and other fundraising events that benefit Horticulture
*Assists with operations and major events at CNC

Job Prerequisites:

Experience in food gardening, working with volunteers; a willingness to learn, take initiative and be a team player; the ability to work outdoors year-round in all kinds of weather and to lift 50 pounds or more.  Bachelor's degree in plant science or related field preferred but not required.

The Unity Garden Coordinator reports to the Manager of Horticulture and Gardens.
