Farm Manager/Profit Sharing Partner Whippoorwill Farm

  • Date Posted November 27, 2017
  • Location West Tisbury, MA
  • Category Agriculture / Business
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Whippoorwill Farm is a ten-acre vegetable farm on Martha's Vineyard Island. We have been in business for over 35 years growing non-certified organic food for our community. In the past we have marketed our crops through a CSA, farmers markets, and wholesale accounts. Currently, the farm has been selling through wholesale markets only.

The farm has begun to transition into low-tillage/no-till farming methods. We have a composting operation that supports all of the farm’s carbon needs and much of the essential nutrient requirements. We are experimenting with various combinations of mulching systems with cover crops and compost. We are very excited with the results and are interested in seeing the farm continue with these sustainable methods of growing.

There are three greenhouses with possibilities to expand, several out buildings, and potential for farmer housing.  Four acres are owned while the remaining 6 acres are leased.  Although there is some equipment, much of it needs to be upgraded. Job description We are looking for an experienced farmer or farmers who would help transition the land into younger hands with a new vision. We are imagining a profit sharing venture that segways into a longer term lease.  Person(s) of interest would have to provide their own financing.  Our goal is to see the farm continue to transition to a low-tillage/no-till farming operation while providing the community with healthy sustainably grown food.  We hope our farm can serve as an education model for other farmers and gardeners to learn from.

Persons applying must have considerable knowledge in crop production and greenhouse management systems.  Experience in no-till farming would be a plus.  He or she must be hard working, and resourceful, with a dedication to the long term agricultural and financial sustainability of the farm.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about growing and interested in no- till farming.  The Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Community is diverse and vibrant, and there is ample opportunity for a new farmer to be part of this movement.
