Company description The University of Georgia VISTA Network was established in 2013 to support local community partners with AmeriCorps VISTA members to increase their capacity for bringing individuals and communities out of poverty in the Athens, GA area. The AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) program places passionate individuals in a year-long, full-time position to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that improve health and educational services, reduce food insecurity, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities.

About AmeriCorps VISTA:
The AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) program places passionate individuals in a year-long, full-time position to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. About Campus Kitchen:

The Campus Kitchen at UGA spotlights sustainable solutions to hunger and food waste and showcases a mutually beneficial university-community partnership. Campus Kitchen runs a food recovery and redistribution enterprise led by UGA students that transforms unused food into meals and groceries for delivery to older adults and human service agencies in Athens, GA.


Campus Kitchen’s work results in equipped, connected and inspired student change-makers, clients receiving nourishment and fellowship through the revealed power of food, and our community growing in our understanding of the systemic challenges facing older adults and our food system. The Campus Kitchen at UGA is an affiliate of the Campus Kitchens Project, and was the first Campus Kitchen to open in Georgia in 2012. The Campus Kitchen at UGA remains centrally focused on combating senior hunger, and is a member of the Athens Senior Hunger Coalition.

About AmeriCorps VISTA:

AmeriCorps VISTA members build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level, and empower individuals and communities. 

The AmeriCorps VISTA position with Campus Kitchen is a year-long service term beginning February 19th, 2019 and ending February 18th, 2020. The position’s benefits include: AmeriCorps VISTA living allowance during service, relocation allowance, health coverage, choice of education award or end of service cash stipend, and mileage reimbursements for work-related travel. Position Duties:

The Campus Kitchen AmeriCorps VISTA member will focus on growing the program’s capacity to serve food-insecure seniors by strengthening volunteer recruitment, training, and recognition procedures and sustain partnerships with volunteer organizations. The VISTA will leverage resources to invest in student leader training and outreach education, and improve existing fundraising efforts. The VISTA will raise awareness about issues of senior hunger and the efforts of the Athens Senior Hunger Coalition through public outreach events and media content development to inspire others to action. 

Knowledge, Skills, Competencies Preferred:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with community partners

  • Experience managing and recruiting volunteers 

  • Food service or culinary experience

  • Programming or education experience related to food security or nutrition

  • Professional, personal or academic interest in gerontology, public health, or food security

  • Understanding of food safety issues and controls

  • Knowledge of grant writing and fundraising methods

  • Knowledge of principles of service-learning and community engagement

  • Ability to work independently on complex tasks

Position Requirements:

  • Access to a personal vehicle

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
