Field and Production Manager Clyde River Farm and Forest

Company description Clyde River Farm and Forest is a developing farm operation with 2+ acres of organic vegetables and berries, an organic Christmas Tree plantation, organic hay production, and the potential for other farm and forest enterprises. Current farm operations include a roadside farmstand, CSA, and some wholesale to local retailers and restaurants. We are looking for an individual or couple to live and work on our Northeast Kingdom Farm in East Charleston, Vermont. The farm is located in a beautiful rural area, surrounded by many protected natural habitats and located amongst several communities in need of fresh, organically grown produce. The owners are seeking help to expand and improve farm enterprises while maintaining the highest level of land stewardship. Job description

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Collaborate with owners in the planning, implementation, and execution of:
    • Crop planning
    • Propagation
    • Transplanting (into high tunnel and outdoor fields)
    • Crop maintenance (including cultivation, mulching, pruning, irrigation, and pest and disease management)
    • Harvesting and distribution (for CSA, farmstand, and wholesale)
    • Expansion and improvement of farm infrastructure
  • Manage WWOOF volunteers as needed
  • Assist with maintenance and harvest for other forest enterprises (Christmas trees, brush for wreath making, and firewood)
  • Assist with hay-making as needed.
  • Ensure high standards of quality in food production
  • Continue to develop and improve marketing (website and social media) and record-keeping databases

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Comfort working both independently and with a team; team management skills a plus
  • 2+ years of farm experience preferred
  • Experience working in the woods is helpful, but not required
  • Having independent transportation is required, as this is a very rural area and some fields are a distance from housing
  • Ability to adapt to change and work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather, in northern Vermont
  • Dedication to land stewardship and a desire to develop the farm business
  • Entrepreneurial experience, positive attitude, and a sense of humor is a plus

COMPENSATION:

  • Housing and some food from the farm is provided; individual or couple will pay utilities
  • A bi-monthly cash salary is provided for 12 months based on level of experience
  • Possibility for profit sharing based on new or expanded farm enterprises
