  • Date Posted December 17, 2017
  • Location Sparta, GA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Elm Street Gardens is a one acre intensive market farm located in downtown Sparta, GA.  An urban garden in a rural town, specializing in diverse annual and perennial produce growing 12 months out of the year.  We market our produce in Sparta at the gardens, in Atlanta at two Farmer’s Markets and to a few local restaurants.

Elm Street Gardens is certified organic and practices no-till farming.  Our goal is to grow the most nutritious vegetables without disrupting the natural processes of soil culture and biology.  We utilize on farm compost and plant based mulch to add organic matter and feed the organisms in the soil.  We also incorporate spent mushroom substrate into our compost from our sister company, Sparta Mushrooms – an indoor mushroom growing facility across the street from the gardens.
In addition to vegetables we have a small number or laying hens, fruit trees and honey bees, that contribute to the overall health of our ecosystem.

Job description We are looking to add a farm hand for the coming season, who will be involved in all parts of the growing process including seed starting, bed preparation, transplanting, weeding, harvest and farmers market sales.

Farming or gardening experience is a plus, but not necessary.  A good work ethic, positive attitude and good communication skills are a must.  As is the ability to learn quickly and move efficiently.

Since we are a small farm, our work is mostly with hand tools (wheelbarrow, rake, broadfork), and we work in all weather year round.

This would be a great position for someone who is passionate about sustainable food production and wants to learn how to grow.
This position will be from March 1 through October 2018 and preference will be given to those who can work the whole season.
Housing is available. Stipend is $1200 per month, going up to $1400 after three months of good work.  Compensation this position is : stipend / non-monetary compensation Application instructions
