Start seeds in the greenhouse. Transplant starts to the field. Weed those new plants, trellis them, mulch them. Harvest them before dawn, and pack them for market.
Pick up the chicks at the post office. Get them settled in the brooder. Feed them, water them, keep the brooder clean. Move them out to fresh pasture, and then move their shelter every day. Slaughter them, pluck them, eviscerate them, and bag them for sale.
Put up a greenhouse. Collect eggs. Build fence. Make compost. Tackle escaped pigs. Pick rocks. Sleep like a rock. Eat the fruits of your labor.
Take on your own farmers market. Pack your coolers. Drive to market. Make things look beautiful. Tell our story. Break down. Come home.
Be part of the CRAFT training program. Attend tours and meetings at other area farms. Meet like-minded people who are as passionate about sustainable agriculture as you are.
Since we run a small farm with a small crew, you'll work with a farmer every day. If you think you want to run your own farm, this is a great way to get a lot of questions answered. We're really open to sharing our successes and mistakes, and hope that our apprentices leave the farm feeling ready to dive right in to their own farming ventures. Our farm is diversified and small, which means that apprentices work across the entire span of the farm business, but there is also a lot of flexibility for adjusting to the specific interests of individual apprentices.
Previous farm experience is great, but not required. We want someone who is passionate, energetic, and responsible. We want someone who can still smile after four hours in 40 degree rain, who likes the way their muscles feel when they are tired. We want someone who can repeatedly lift 50lbs, asks good questions, and who has a drivers license.
Room - Cozy yurt tucked into the woods below the garden, with wood stove and propane cooktop, and composting outhouse. Access to laundry and bathroom facilities and wireless internet in the farmhouse.
Board - Shared lunches, all you can eat vegetables, "farmer" eggs, and some kitchen staples.
Stipend - depends on experience, starting at $800/month
Education - CRAFT Program (http://www.craftfarmapprentice.com/). Twice-monthly trips to nearby farms with other farm apprentices to learn about what each of these farms does best.
Work side-by-side with and learn from experienced, small scale, sustainable farmers.
