Apprentice on Diversified Farm Square Roots Farm

  • Date Posted January 04, 2018
  • Location Lanesborough, MA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Internship/Apprentice
Company Description Square Roots Farm is a diversified farm located on 185 acres in Lanesborough, Massachusetts entering our ninth year of operation. We raise around 2,000 meat chickens, 150 turkeys, and 20-25 pigs per year, and we manage a growing herd of mostly Rotokawa Devons for 100% grass fed beef. Our egg operation is set to expand to 1,000 hens this year, and we grow a modest amount of vegetables for farmers market. While not certified organic, we follow organic practices and work to honor, restore, and build upon relationships among people, animals, food, and the land. Our customer base spans multiple cross-sections of our community, from seasonal tourists and second home owners to middle class residents and families facing financial struggles.  We vend at farmers' markets that serve low income communities by accepting and doubling SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) benefits. Job Description The Job

Start seeds in the greenhouse. Transplant starts to the field. Weed those new plants, trellis them, mulch them. Harvest them before dawn, and pack them for market.

Pick up the chicks at the post office. Get them settled in the brooder. Feed them, water them, keep the brooder clean. Move them out to fresh pasture, and then move their shelter every day. Slaughter them, pluck them, eviscerate them, and bag them for sale.

Put up a greenhouse. Collect eggs. Build fence. Make compost. Tackle escaped pigs. Pick rocks. Sleep like a rock. Eat the fruits of your labor.

Take on your own farmers market. Pack your coolers. Drive to market. Make things look beautiful. Tell our story. Break down. Come home.

Be part of the CRAFT training program. Attend tours and meetings at other area farms. Meet like-minded people who are as passionate about sustainable agriculture as you are.

Since we run a small farm with a small crew, you'll work with a farmer every day. If you think you want to run your own farm,  this is a great way to get a lot of questions answered. We're really open to sharing our successes and mistakes, and hope that our apprentices leave the farm feeling ready to dive right in to their own farming ventures. Our farm is diversified and small, which means that apprentices work across the entire span of the farm business, but there is also a lot of flexibility for adjusting to the specific interests of individual apprentices.

The Qualifications
Previous farm experience is great, but not required. We want someone who is passionate, energetic, and responsible. We want someone who can still smile after four hours in 40 degree rain, who likes the way their muscles feel when they are tired. We want someone who can repeatedly lift 50lbs, asks good questions, and who has a drivers license.

The Compensation
Room - Cozy yurt tucked into the woods below the garden, with wood stove and propane cooktop, and composting outhouse. Access to laundry and bathroom facilities and wireless internet in the farmhouse.

Education - CRAFT Program (  Twice-monthly trips to nearby farms with other farm apprentices to learn about what each of these farms does best.

Work side-by-side with and learn from experienced, small scale, sustainable farmers.

The Location
Lanesborough is located in the heart of Berkshire County, which is known for its cultural and natural resources. While you're here, hike up Mount Greylock (home of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry), canoe along the Housatonic River, visit one of the many art museums, attend one of the popular summer music festivals at Mass MoCA, and take visitors for a picnic and a concert at Tanglewood.
