- Job type Internship/Apprentice
We are a maple sugaring farm in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts in a town called Worthington. My husband and I have a love for sugaring and working the land on which we have sustained ourselves for many years.
Internship descriptionWe are a family-farm located in the hills of Western Massachusetts, producing Pure Maple Syrup (we have over 5000 taps). We are looking to fill internship position for the upcoming Maple Sugaring season.
Position Duties:
--Work in the woods setting up and cleaning up equipment for the spring sugaring season
--Walking and repairing sap lines and assisting in the maintenance of the sugarbush during the season
--Assisting with wood-fire evaporator and boiling down of sap into syrup
--Various other farm tasks and chores
The intern will be exposed to all aspects of the sugaring process—from sap to syrup. While the sugaring season is short, it is intense. Interns should be prepared to work long hours (we often boil at night after the sap has stopped running), and to be on call and consistently available throughout the season. There will be long hours spent outdoors, working in all conditions.
However interns will definitely get time off at points when the sap is not running, and at slow points over the season.
We use all of the latest technology in our sugaring operation, and fieldwork is very technical. Technical, mechanical, and woods experience is highly preferred, although not required. Chainsaw skills are also a plus.
Housing provided.
Start date: Early February, End date: Mid April
