Job Description: The Director of Youth Programming's role is to help maintain and build on the partnership between the Youth Farm and the High School for Public Service (HSPS) and to facilitate engaging experiences for youth through various programs. During the school year, the Director will work with teachers and students to increase knowledge about topics including but not limited to agriculture, food systems, social and food justice, and cooking and nutrition. In the fall and spring, the Director will utilize the farm as an outdoor classroom for HSPS students and students from other Wingate Campus schools that wish to join Farm Club; he/she/they will also co-teach Go Green courses and facilitate an after school Farm Club.

 

Seasonal work flow: The Director of Youth Programming will work as a co-teacher for Go Green! classes at the High School for Public Service and co-facilitate Farm Club during the school year: Semester 1, September-January, and Semester 2 February-June. The Director of Youth Programming will plan for and coordinate the Summer Youth Program, beginning planning in March and advertising for the program in April and May, facilitating the program from June-mid August, and completing post-summer program wrap up in September. In the Fall, Winter, and Spring, the DYP will work with the co-farm managers to write and submit grants for funding. Grants received for youth programs will be managed by the DYP (requesting funds, managing & recording expenses, reporting to funders on grant progress).

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with farm managers to develop an annual strategic plan
  • Plan and co-teach Go Green! lessons 1 day/week with HSPS Service Learning Director Nirvani Bissessar (day of the week is flexible)
  • Upload all lesson plans and program management tools to the Youth Farm Drive
  • Set up annual meeting with Wingate administration to present on Youth Programs
  • Facilitate after school Farm Club once a week, fall and spring semesters
  • Plan and facilitate a 7-week Summer Youth program, including collaborations with other youth farming groups and a final project
  • Hire 8 to 12 Summer Youth Tillers from Wingate Campus, mostly from HSPS
  • Hire a Summer Youth Intern to help run the Summer Youth Program in spring
  • Maintain an HSPS farm board with up to date farm news and activities
  • Seek collaboration and coordination with other Wingate Groups such as KAVI, as well as other urban farm youth groups
  • Help with irrigation and farm work when needed
  • Run three Saturday Volunteer Days
  • Complete grant reports as needed
  • Co-facilitate regular staff meetings, frequency and length depends on time of year
  • Work with fellow staff to prepare annual Youth Farm budget
  • Help plan, support and attend project fundraisers, and lead fall Harvest Festival planning
  • Assist farm with social media by posting on Tuesdays & Thursdays: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Clean and help maintain the Farm Office
 

Desired Qualities:

  • Commitment to social justice and desire to work collaboratively to set goals and create programs
  • Experience and passion for working with high school aged youth
  • At least one season of farming or gardening experience; two years or more a plus
  • Positive experience teaching in a classroom setting; garden-based education preferred
  • Positive experience working with African/African American, Caribbean, Hispanic, and Asian communities
  • Strong desire to expand food and social justice (direct work experience a plus)
  • Knowledge of the food justice movement
  • Ability to go with the flow
  • Self-starter and comfortable/able to lead people and work independently on site
  • Responsible, reliable, motivated, and has a sense of humor
  • Self-sufficient in work; comfortable with self-management
  • Excellent communication skills (i.e.: articulating needs, setting student expectations, managing follow through in student engagement)
  • Ability and knowledge of maintaining personal finances (as an independent consultant, you will need to save and file your taxes independently)
 

Additional/Preferred Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Google Drive and Excel
  • Knowledge of foodways and agricultural techniques and philosophies from the African and Asian Diasporas
  • Knowledge or experience with Popular Education theories of learning
  • Training of Trainers certification
  • Familiarity with hand tools and light power equipment
 

Hours/Compensation:

25 hrs/week; this position is paid, and includes a CSA Share.
 

Suggested Hourly Breakdown (25 hours/week)

Fall/Spring Semesters (Sept - June)

    • 6 hrs/wk - Planning/Scheduling Go Green
    • 6 hr/wk co-Teaching Go Green! 1 day/week
    • 4 hrs/wk - Farm Club (2 hrs to execute projects; 2 hr for prep/planning/coordinating logistics for projects/ideas/trips)
    • 2 - 4 hrs/wk - Managing a Youth Program Intern/Farm School Apprentice
    • 1 - 2 hrs/wk - Staff/Administrative meetings as needed
    • 1 hr/wk - general email/social media responsibilities
    • 1 - 4 hrs/wk - Farm Maintenance Support (irrigation in Fall & Spring)
    • 4 - 7 hrs/wk - Farm Events/Tabling School Events (seasonal)
    • 1 hr/wk - Youth Farm Newsletter per month
  • 2-4 hrs/wk - Grant writing or reporting (as needed)
 

Summer (July - August)

  • 20 hrs/wk - Summer Youth Program (promo, info meetings,  applications/interviews, coordinating field trips, organizing/teaching farm lessons or health/nutrition lessons)
  • 30 min - 1 hr/wk - general E-mail/social media responsibilities
  • 1 hr/wk - Newsletter
  • 1 hr/wk - Staff meeting
  • 2 hrs in August - CAN/Go Green lesson planning
