In addition to the two seasonal apprenticeship positions, Jenny and Chris work full-time on the farm as well as employ two local part-time farmers. Our farm markets three seasons out of the year, spring, summer, and fall, using the winter months to relax, travel, catch up on big projects, attend agriculture conferences and plan for the year ahead. We are now moving into our 12th season as full-time farmers, and while we still experience our share of challenges, we do feel like we are slowly shaping our lifestyle and our soil into a more suitable, sturdy, sacred place, and that inspires and encourages our work. Apprentices are compensated with a monthly stipend of $700, plus a weekly CSA share ($30 value per week) and lunch is provided. We all take turns preparing lunch for the crew, so if you want to take part in this rotation, you can practice your culinary skills during this time! This shared meal has been a favorite part of our apprenticeship for past workers.
Housing is included and the house is in very good condition; 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, screened in porch, brand new a/c and heat, washer/dryer, wireless internet, nice kitchen and large living room. The house is located in a quiet, working class, wooded neighborhood 15 minutes from the farm. It backs up to FDR State Park. We pay the rent, of course, along with propane, water, internet, and the first $60 of the monthly electric bill. You will have to drive to work so transportation is required, but that can be shared between the two apprentices.
Desire to learn farming as a career or lifestyle is required. We want to work with folks who are serious about sustainable agriculture. Our main objective is to grow the best quality food possible for our 125 share CSA, and that takes a lot of hard, long hours. It also takes serious attention to the smallest details, so if you are just looking for a place to find yourself, or kind of interested in what farming may be all about, no need to apply to our apprenticeship.
Apprentices will participate in all aspects of the farm: increasing soil fertility through composting and cover cropping, greenhouse work, caring for the chickens, weeding, transplanting, direct seeding, harvesting, and marketing through farmer's markets, CSA and restaurant sales. Also exposure to food preservation, record keeping, and crop planning.
Many past apprentices have gone on to manage farms after their experience with us, so if you take advantage of all the education that can be gleaned from our farm, you will be prepared to do the same! We are well connected with the farming community in Georgia, so when management opportunities are available, we will know about them.
Apprentices can expect to work 40-50 hours a week with 1-2 days off and 1 additional day off each month. Apprentices will rotate working with us at the Saturday market and CSA deliveries. As a side note for days off, we are 1 hour south of Atlanta, 30 minutes from Columbus, and 10 minutes from Callaway Gardens and FDR State Park (hiking trails and camping).
-Previous sustainable farming experience is preferred. At least some gardening experience is strongly preferred. But most importantly we are looking for folks with a strong work ethic!
-Our ideal apprentice has a positive outlook on life and the ability to have fun and enjoy the work.
-Physical ability to carry out difficult manual labor is a must.
– Although we are a diversified operation, there are some tasks that are quite repetitive (such as weeding), so you have to be willing to work through the monotony with focused energy. We do our best to work efficiently so these tasks take as little time as possible, but still, its just the nature of this small scale operation.
-Lots of energy and enthusiasm are needed!!
-The ability to work out in the heat is necessary. It gets very hot and humid in Georgia in the summer, so we're looking for apprentices that can handle the heat.
