Our Farms & Facilities: Harlem Grown operates soil-based urban farms, school gardens, and a hydroponic greenhouse.  Our offices and properties are located between 122 and 152 Streets in Central and East Harlem, Manhattan.

Our Programs: Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships placing sustainability mentors in four public schools, as well as educational farm tours, summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, an after school program, and a workforce development program for at-risk young adults. Our community development programs include wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents. Job Overview: Harlem Grown seeks an organized, enthusiastic Farm Manager to manage urban farm production, lead educational tours and workshops, and supervise farm crew and volunteers. The Farm Manager will report to the Agriculture Director, and work closely with the Program and Development Teams to schedule activities and develop educational workshops.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage planting, design, maintenance, and harvesting of our urban farms and school gardens including, but not limited to soil amendment and cultivation, digging, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, pruning, seed sowing, planting, composting, harvest collection and distribution
  • Work with the Agriculture Director to plan, support and lead educational activities held on the farms including scheduling, preparation for visits, creation of educational materials, lesson delivery, and evaluation
  • Supervise temporary and part-time farm crew, providing a supportive, structured learning environment for workforce development staff to learn the basics of urban farming
  • Manage volunteer service opportunities on the farms, including preparation and supervision for individual volunteers and groups of all ages
  • Maintain accurate farm records of harvest yields, pest control efforts, food scraps collected for composting, volunteer engagement, and other farm activities
  • Ensure all equipment is secured and maintained
  • Provide weekly photo updates and brief narrative reports for social media and other promotional efforts
  • Work as a team member to support Harlem Grown initiatives and programs
  • Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and responsibility
 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills
  • Gardening or farming experience, and knowledge of organic and sustainable practices
  • Experience in youth education, teaching, or public speaking
  • Ability to supervise staff and volunteers, and work with diverse community members
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Ability to perform physical labor; must be able to lift up to 40lbs
  • Motivated, creative and punctual, able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to work overtime, during mornings, nights or weekends
  • Master composter certificate, preferred
  • Valid driver license, preferred
  • Spanish language fluency, a plus
