Company description GrowGood, Inc. (“GrowGood”) is Los Angeles-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates a 1.5-acre urban farm just south of Los Angeles, in Bell, CA, providing food and opportunities to the adjacent the homeless shelter. To provide jobs and job training for shelter clients and a revenue source to sustain its programming, GrowGood has developed a social enterprise business to grow and sell produce in its newly constructed 30’ x 48’ commercial greenhouse. We are looking for a Commercial Manager to spearhead GrowGood’s commercial efforts. Job description

The ideal Commercial Manager has an entrepreneurial mindset and great leadership skills; possesses culinary and gardening experience; thrives in a collaborative environment; and exhibits excellent organizational abilities.  

The Commercial Manager will work closely with GrowGood’s executive director, board of directors, farm manager and staff to promote and expand the organization’s commercial activity to generate revenue and lead to sustainable growth.

Responsibilities:

  • Overall profit and loss of the commercial division.
  • Acts as an entrepreneur-in-residence to execute on the commercial plan and “do whatever it takes” to make the business successful.
  • Develops and responds to customers for GrowGood products, in-ground and in the greenhouse.
  • Develops and executes strategy for GrowGood participation in farmers’ markets.
  • Acts as point person for restaurant customers identified by staff or board.
  • Develops and pursues leads for new sources of revenue for GrowGood products.
  • Oversees invoicing and payment collection.
  • Works to broaden and deepen awareness among the restaurant community of the GrowGood brand.
  • Trains employees and/or volunteers, including participants in our job training program (Temporary Employment Program) and other shelter clients, to carry out tasks that support sales of GrowGood products from the farm and at farmers markets.
  • Keeps aware of culinary trends to keep the farm’s offerings on track.
  • Works with the farm manager to align growing plans with customers’ needs and ensure the farm’s readiness to meet them.
  • Develops a strategy to increase revenue over time.
  • Oversees and helps to carry out marketing efforts.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned by executive director.
  • Lends general support to staff as needed.

 

Requirements:

  • Experience working with farmers markets, restaurants, and retail customers strongly desired.
  • Strong business acumen combined with a deep understanding of consumers and culinary trends.
  • Proven experience in sales and/or marketing and managing relationships with key clients.
  • Solid knowledge of performance reporting and financial/budgeting processes.
  • Commercial awareness partnered with a strategic mindset.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Cooking and gardening experience. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • BS/BA in business administration, finance or relevant field is a plus.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and gritty attitude required to adapt and problem solve.
