Compensation: $15/hr
Type: Seasonal Full- Time/ Part-Time
Start/End Dates: Immediate
Schedule: 20 - 30 hours per week; Applicants must be flexible to work a Tuesday – Saturday schedule, or a Sunday through Thursday schedule between the hours of 7:30AM and 6PM
Our Farms & Facilities: Harlem Grown operates three soil-based urban farms, four school gardens, one hydroponic greenhouse, and is currently building a new soil-based farm and hydroponic facility. Our offices and properties are located between 122 and 151 Streets in Central Harlem, Manhattan.
Our Programs: Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships placing sustainability mentors in three public schools, as well as educational farm tours, summer camp, a Saturday leadership program, and a workforce development program for at-risk young adults. Our community development programs include wellness workshops, special events, commercial and community food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.
Position Overview: The Greenhouse Coordinator (GH) will oversee the daily operation of the 127th Street Impact Farm, a two-story hydroponic greenhouse located at Harlem Grown’s 77 w. 127th Street Farm. In addition to daily operations - testing pH and nutrient levels, seeding in growing mediums, and adjusting water pressure - the GH Coordinator must ensure that the property surrounding the GH is well maintained, free of safety hazards, and aesthetically pleasing, at all times. The GH Coordinator will also lead tours, and develop and facilitate educational programming at the Impact Farm. Outside of GH specific duties, the coordinator will also help maintain soil-based growing beds on the 127th farm, and process the 127th street compost.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for maintaining proper nutrient and pH levels in greenhouse water reservoir
- Apply integrated pest management techniques to ensure all greenhouse produce is pest free
- Seed and transplant crops according to 30 day crop rotation
- Plan, support and lead educational tours and workshops in the greenhouse, which may include preparation for visits, lesson creation/delivery, and evaluation
- Ensure all related equipment and materials are returned and secured after each visit
- Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and responsibility
- Participate in farm maintenance tasks (composting, planting, weeding, watering, etc)
- Adhere to all HG safety protocols and requirements
- Attend all orientations and personnel developments in regards to HG and the position
- Have fun, and help visitors of all ages to enjoy their trip to the farm and greenhouse!
Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal communication and facilitation skills
- Ability to work with diverse community members
- Reliable, punctual, professional and motivated
- Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Gardening or farming experience, and knowledge of organic and sustainable practices, preferred
- Complete a background check
- At least one season of hydroponic growing experience required
- Experience in youth education, teaching, or public speaking, preferred
- Flexibility to work different days or extended shifts, appreciated, but not required
- Spanish language fluency, a plus
