The Farm Educator is a year-round, full-time (40 hours/week) position responsible for supporting and teaching programs for adults and high school students with developmental disabilities. This position includes greenhouse, hydroponic, raised garden bed, and row crops. In addition to leading teaching programs and providing direct support to the participants to operate their farm and CSA programs, and farm camp programs, the Farm Educator will assist in preparing teaching materials and contribute their own creative ideas to programs. The Farm Educator reports to the Program Manager of the Trellis Center and works closely with the Farm Manager, Program Coordinators, and other staff. The position will start at $13.00/hour with potential for annual increases.
Duties:
• Technically assist participants; provide direct support services for vocational and community engagement programs; provide education and training in farm operation.
• Work with the program coordinator(s) to evaluate growth / deficit areas in participants’ knowledge / abilities; develop materials, lessons, and methods with which to promote growth and improvement of ability; instruct participants using these lessons and materials.
• Train and supervise participants carrying out the day-to-day tasks of farm operation; planting, cultivating, harvesting, financial, and direct marketing activities with the long-term goal of the participants assuming these tasks independently; help identify and correct problems to ensure the program runs efficiently using best farming practices.
• Create any additional supports for participants to complete their jobs (modification of tools to make tasks more accessible, visual prompts to help promote independence, etc.); working with the program coordinator(s) to identify and resolve safety issues; be familiar with good agriculture practices and support participant’s engaging in those practices.
Requirements:
• Minimum 1 season organic vegetable production experience
• Developmental disability direct support experience preferred
• Valid driver’s license
• CPR/First Aid certified preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
• Teaching, training, or mentoring experience preferred Compensation this position is : hourly Application instructions
