Internship description

Organic CSA Farm Apprentice

We are seeking one additional motivated, task-oriented, dedicated and fun individuals to apprentice at Serenbe Farms for the 2018 Winter season (Immediately - February). Possibility to extend through next year. Candidates must have a year of farm or other related/outdoor work experience and must be able to demonstrate a passionate interest in farming and agriculture.

Our apprentice positions are physically and mentally demanding, but also provide the opportunities for long-term employment and farm management training. Strong apprentices are highly encouraged to continue through the winter and on for a second season, and we draw our management staff primarily from people who have completed the apprentice program.

The work week consists of approximately 50 hours, with 9-hour weekdays, and rotating Saturday farmstand days and weekend chore duties.

Housing is provided onsite in a woodsy cottage. Our farm is located in the community of Serenbe, an Agrihood 30 mins South of Atlanta.  We are a village, an “Agrihood” in protected forest, with all the amenities of a small town.

Apprentices will be responsible for whatever food they need in addition to free vegetables produced at the farm.

Apprentices receive a $1000/month stipend.

The apprenticeship is best viewed as a hands-on, work-training program, rather than an exclusively “educational” experience. Apprentices are trained on daily livestock and greenhouse chores, and planting, weeding, harvesting and marketing vegetables through a CSA, restaurant sales, and a farmers market. We pride ourselves on being a tech savvy and progressive farm, and have many fun tools for a small scale farm. Apprentices will find that they gain the most experience by showing initiative, attention to detail, good work ethic and the ability to ask for help. Strong communication skills are vital to thriving within a small hardworking group.

While apprentices are exposed to a diverse array of farm tasks, they are also required to take responsibility for one, or more, of the following Concentration areas:

Crop Production: will work with our Field Service Manager and Farm Managers on field production of vegetable crops. This person will be responsible for cultivation of crops, crop health and fertility and record keeping. He or she will also learn work with management of harvest, wash and pack activities.

Education: will be a lead on school and organizational tours.  Must be comfortable working with and speaking in front of up to 50 people, of any age and demographic.

Culinary Garden: will work a few hours per week in the Culinary Garden at our Farm to Table Restaurant. Work will include maintaining raised beds and coordinating harvests with the chef

Cut Flower Production: Will work focused each week in the cut flower fields alongside Manager, from planting to harvesting,  and making bouquets for sales, and wholesale harvests for florists.  Will prep and seed succession flowers each week.

Private bedroom in 3 bedroom, 1 bath home walking distance to farm.  Cottage is in forrest like setting surrounded by trees, with small yard for grilling and relaxing in a hammock, as well as a small deck.  Housing will be shared with 2 other apprentices.

Schedule

We work hard to maintain an 8am-5 pm with a one hour lunch break at noon on our farm, for life quality and structure.

There are occasional hours outside of this as needed.
