Job description Berrien County is a rural county heavily dependent on agriculture for its economic vitality and has a total Farm Gate value of over $120 million with vegetables alone accounting for over $9 million. It is strong in the traditional row crops like cotton, peanuts, and small grains, and diversified with a strong vegetable production base, fruit & nut, animal, and horticulture. Berrien County ranks 2nd in GA counties in the production of tobacco & blackberries. The county is fortunate to rank in the top 10 GA Counties in watermelon, zucchini, and farrow to finish hog production, feeder pigs, and finishing hogs with poultry, hatching layers, and beef cattle production being very predominate. The incumbent will be responsible for managing this vast Agricultural and Natural Resources program in Berrien County by providing educational opportunities in production agriculture and natural resources to a wide variety of audiences.

-Ability to design, coordinate, and teach educational programs to meet community needs
-Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and engage with groups and committees
-Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
-Ability to speak to/teach large groups of residents
-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county, district, and state staff, local government employees, and clientele
-Ability to show high standards of professionalism in personal contacts, appearance, and work habits
-Ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely through written and verbal communication
 
  • Serve as an adviser and teacher for Agriculture & Natural Resources to the local community
  • Develop a purposeful relationship with farmers, landowners, stakeholders and other county agents to accomplish outreach activities as related to Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR)
  • Utilize the expertise of these advisory groups, community leaders, public officials and representatives of intended audiences to analyze data, identify needs and assist in developing educational programs
  • Develop a plan of work that is equitable in meeting the varied socioeconomic needs of the county
  • Conduct promotional efforts to expand the public’s view of extension programming
  • Utilize research data and information on emerging issues in program development
  • Target specific audiences for educational programs addressing critical issues identified in plan of work
  • Implement the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Civil Rights/Equal Opportunity plan
  • Develop and conduct interdisciplinary programs with other staff members based on critical issues
  • Partner and collaborate with other Extension programs – such as 4-H and Family and Consumer Science
  • Collaborate with other agencies and community groups to plan and implement programs
  • Other duties as assigned by District Director, Program Area Coordinator, County Coordinator or State Faculty.
