Company description
Hawthorne Valley Farm is a 900-acre certified biodynamic and organic farm in Ghent, NY that is part of a larger non-profit organization.  We are highly diversified with vegetable operation, dairy herd, beef and pork production, organic bakery, farmstead creamery and on-site lacto-fermentation operation.  We are also home to a K-12 waldorf school and various other educational programs.  Our mission is to strive for social and cultural renewal through the integration of education, agriculture and the arts.
Internship description We are hiring for our 2019 Whole Farm Apprenticeship

Whole Farm Apprentice - 

WF apprentices gain hands-on experience working with both our vegetable operations and our diversified livestock operation (dairy cows, beef, pork and chickens.)  WF apprentices gain exposure to our on-farm compost and small grains production as well as biodynamic agricultural practices.  

Apprentices also participate in regional farm visits and supplemental classroom sessions to compliment the hands-on skills training they receive on the farm.

Primary skills gained:
  • All aspects of vegetable production on 14 acres for 300 member CSA and 90 member Winter CSA, weekly NYC farmer's markets, on-site farm store and other wholesale accounts.
  • Tractor operation
  • Milking and dairy herd management
  • Rotational grazing, fencing and pasture management
  • Beef, pork and chicken production.


Compensation:

Apprentices receive a stipend of approximately $900/month (subject to taxes), on-farm housing and access to an abundance of farm food - veggies, dairy, bread and baked goods and meat.


Positions start mid-February and run through Thanksgiving. Options for winter work and advanced apprenticeships in following season are available.
