Assistant Field Manager Wild Work Farm

  • Date Posted January 03, 2019
  • Location Keene Valley, NY
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Wild Work Farm is a three-acre, woman-owned and operated diversified farm that grows exceptional fruits and vegetables.  We have about an acre and a half in crops with another acre and a half in cover crop.  After an awesome first season, we're going into our second year of production and looking to move towards greater efficiency with the resources we have.

WWF is located in the beautiful High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate NY.  The farm is at the north end of our little valley, meaning we have a beautiful and wild spot, surrounded by woods and mountains with the Ausable River on our western border.  The Adirondacks are New York's hidden gem - six million acres of rugged, unique park land and small towns. Wild Work Farm produces food for the Adirondack region and is continuing a family tradition of growing food in the High Peaks on this piece of land. We are part of a growing community of small farms pushing for progressive food production in this region and couldn't be more thrilled to be part of the movement.

We grow a wide variety of annual vegetables in open field production, as well as in one heated greenhouse and one high tunnel. We have a small blueberry field and are planning for more perennials and an orchard in Spring 2019. We are lucky to market our produce close to home - at farmers' markets, a market-style CSA share, and through local wholesale outlets.

Job description The Assistant Field Manager will be involved in all aspects of the farm's production from seeding and planting, to soil preparation, cultivation and weeding, harvesting and post-harvest.  You know the drill!  You'll be participating in all the auxiliary tasks as well, like moving irrigation, packing orders, washing totes, mowing, and turning compost. We are a small farm and we do most of our bed prep by hand and with a BCS, all of our cultivation by hand, and all of our harvesting by hand.  We have a full-size tractor that we can use for large jobs and for preparing big sections of our field.

As with all farm work, there will be difficult tasks as well as those that are repetitive.  Prior farm experience is helpful in understanding the nature of farm work, but a mastery of systems is not necessary. Every farm is different, and we will happily train you in our methods of planting, cultivation, harvest and post-harvest.

We are a small team, consisting of you(!), the manager/owner, and one or two other part-time employees/interns.  As assistant manager your job will include helping to guide other workers in daily tasks.  It will also require you to see the big-picture vision of the business in the context of a day's to-dos, or in any given week.  This means that your power of observation will be super important as you help to provide a second set of eyes for the farm.

Required Qualifications/Qualities
- Valid drivers' license
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. safely
- Flexible and adaptable!
- Prior experience on a commercial vegetable operation
- Ability to interact with the public and with customers professionally
- Ability to balance attention to detail with efficiency
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to talk through directions for a task or process and ask for clarification where needed.  Ability to give and receive feedback.

Desired Qualifications/Qualities
- Minimum two years experience on a vegetable operation, preferred two years on the same farm
- Desire to learn and grow, both personally and professionally
- Can work well under pressure and even maintain a sense of humor during intense summer days!

I'm looking for a mature person who can work well alone and in a small team. The best fit for this job will be someone who finds joy and pleasure in hard work, a job well-done, and in constantly striving to do a job better or more efficiently.  If this is you, you will find endless rewards in working with us!

This position starts full-time in May, with the option for some part-time work in April, and runs through the end of October with the potential for work into November.  Does not include housing, but will help you find housing locally if needed.  This position includes farm food, a market discount, and a stipend for off-farm food from some of our amazing local farms. Compensation this position is : hourly Application instructions
